The Cavern Club in Liverpool had a special show by the Mersey Beatles and the Shakers to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' debut at the club on Feb. 9, 1961.
Donna Jackson of the British Beatles Fan Club sent us this report on the events:
I was at the Cavern today for the celebrations of the 50th anniversary since the Beatles first played the Cavern. The party began at 12noon, with local radio station, Radio City, doing a live broadcast, and then kicked off in earnest at 1pm with the Mersey Beatles. The Cavern was packed, and the atmosphere was amazing. The audience included some of the stars from the Mersey Beat years, and also a lady who had been in the audience 50 years ago and witnessed the Beatles first appearance! After a brilliant set from the Mersey Beatles, the Shakers took to the stage and the party continued. I had to leave before the end of their set, but it was totally fabulous to be able to join in the celebrations at least for a little while.
You can see pictures of the celebration inside and outside the club in the slideshow. Also, we've added a great video of the Mersey Beatles playing a few early Beatles songs at the Cavern in a previous gig to give you an idea of what it might have sounded like today. From the video, it was something special.
