Liverpool Beatles landmark celebrates its 55 year past with a look at its future

Liverpool’s famed Cavern Club celebrated its 55th birthday on Monday by inviting 200 music students from Solihull Music Services to perform on the same stage where the Beatles, Paul McCartney, David Gilmore, the Arctic Monkeys and Adele all once played.

“We have an ongoing relationship with Solihull Music Services after they started bringing pupils to visit us almost four years ago," said Cavern Club owner Dave Jones. "We were extremely impressed with the musical ability we saw and since then we have honored our commitment to fostering new music talent by inviting them back for our birthday."

The event included a visit from Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, council member Frank Prendergast, who met with the Mayor of Solihull Irene Chamberlain and the pupils. They presented the Club's owners with a giant birthday card.

The birthday marked Solihull Music Services’ annual pilgrimage to the club which allowed the students, aged between 12 and 18 years old, perform 20-minute sets of their own material on the Cavern Club stage. Solihull Music Services partners with pupils and schools to provide equipment and opportunities for music making.

Jones said the club did something special for the students. “To mark the occasion we made each performer an honorary member of our new Cavern Club membership scheme," he said. The Cavern started as a members club and we feel that now is the right time to go back to our roots. Those who sign up will have access to exclusive content on our website along with other 'member only' benefits.”

Liverpool Lord Mayor, Councillor Frank Prendergast, said the club "has played a pivotal role in pop music throughout the world. I’m proud and excited to have celebrated this landmark birthday with the owners and some ofour future musical stars.”

The club opened its doors on Jan. 16, 1957. Resident tribute bands and original acts still  perform there seven days a week.

The club’s has more anniversary events scheduled this year, including many involving Beatles music. The club's schedule is at http://www.cavernclub.org/whats-on.
