Livermore’s Casie Cathrea takes 3rd San Diego Jr Amateur title

Casie Cathrea, 17, a high school senior from Livermore who will play college golf at Oklahoma State University next year, captured her third San Diego Junior Amateur title over the weekend, coming on strong over the last eighteen holes to finish +1 for the tournament, defeating Rong Ji of China by 6 strokes. Cathrea is the defending San Diego Junior Amateur champion in the Girls 15-18 division, and also won the title in 2010.

Playing at the Sycuan Resort, in El Cajon, CA, Cathrea trailed Ji by four strokes, 74 to 70, after the first day of the three-day tournament, and was tied with Shannon Oh, of Carlsbad, CA, for second place. The future OSU Cowgirl, who wears the Oklahoma State orange & black colors with pride, improved on her first round score by one stroke on the second day of the tournament, and improved her position, from second- to first-place, as her two nearest competitors slipped back with matching 77s on the resort’s par-72 Oak Glen course.

Cathrea hit her stride in Sunday’s final round, carding a 2-under 70 on the strength of six birdies against four bogeys, while Ji and Oh could do no better than 76 and 78, respectively. The Livermore teen led the field in eagles and birdies, as well as outscoring her competitors on par-4 and par-5 holes, with scoring averages of 4.06 and 4.56, respectively.
