Live report, pic from the rink: New York Islanders 3, Ottawa Senators 1 after 2

After two periods of play it’s the New York Islanders 3 and the Ottawa Senators 1 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

Coming into tonight’s game the Islanders (29 points) were among several teams just outside of the playoff picture looking in. The New York Rangers are just a point ahead of the Isles in ninth place (30 points).

There isn’t much distance between the teams that are in and the teams that are out. The New Jersey Devils (eighth), Winnipeg Jets (seventh) and Toronto Maple Leafs (sixth) are in a three way 32-point tie coming into tonight’s NHL action. The Devils and Rangers are playing tonight.

It’s not inconceivable that the Isles capture a playoff spot that has alluded the team for years. March, so far, has been real good to the Isles who are sporting a 5-1-1 record during that time. Meanwhile they are getting some help from a floundering Rangers team that’s been flip-flopping positions with the Isles in the standings in recent days.

The talk of the town in New York right now is the Islanders, not the Rangers.
