Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists is hosting an action-packed night of multi-cultural music; spoken word poetry; dance; auctions; organic food, teas and desserts; as well as performances by local artists and more, this Friday, May 6, starting at 7:30 pm until 1 am, all to help launch local artist and community worker, Asher Lyons, on a new tour, starting in Los Angeles.
For the past decade, Asher Lyons has dedicated his time to producing international multi-cultural gatherings; helping to bring indigenous wisdom keepers and elders together, from many tribes and nations, to exchange and share their knowledge. Bridging these elements with ceremony, Asher Lyons uses this knowledge to teach and work with incarcerated and at-risk youth throughout the Bay Area.
The tangible, positive impact Lyons’ work has had on local vulnerable and marginalized youth has moved Asher to share his work, performances and plays, to others outside of the Bay Area. His first stop is LA. Therefore, the proceeds from this conscious community event will help support his vision and commitment to his priceless work.
Artists and performances include:
CJ Sustenance - Acoustic folk music. "The lush, whispery songs of CJ Sustenance are simple in nature, yet complex in depth and understanding. His story telling nature provides each song with a journey any human spirit can relate with."
Jason Bayani - Spoken Work Slam Poet. Jason’s work has been widely published and he has been on 7 national poetry slam teams. He is currently the 2010 Individual World Poetry Slam (IWPS) representative for Oakland.
Whiskerman Band - Graham takes to the stage wildly wielding guitar, violin, piano and a voice that's both powerful and vulnerable. The result is a Frankenstein fusion of a simple folk backbone, rich classical core, wide-streching art-rock limbs and big jazz feet. The lyrics dig deep into familiar subjects of love and loss, but then wander further out... into the territory of ghosts, and beyond to the archetypal landscapes of a vivid hallucination.
Ernesto Olmos- Traditional music and dance from Oaxaca, Mexico.
Hunam Krew - hip-hop folk (folk-hop): Music for the heart.
DJ set by Oshan Anand, as well as a Capoeira performance; an auction of holistic goodies and art work; organic foods, desserts and Tea Ceremony by the Amazing Om Shan Tea. (Note: this is an alcohol free event!)
