There's nothing more pleasant than an unexpected gift. The gift we're referring to is Here We Go Magic, a Brooklyn, NY band that brought their sound to Emo's outdoor stage this past Wednesday. On a typically hot, August night in Austin, Luke Temple and his band cast their spell over the audience with hypnotizing riffs mixed with elements of krautrock, folk and current electronic effects. After a few songs, it was apparent where the band's name derived from. The effect, was indeed, magic.
After the usual feedback issues during the opening song of the set, HWGM settled down into a nice, even groove. Looking cool when it's nearly 95 degrees on stage sounds difficult, but Temple, Michael Bloch,Peter Hale, Jen Turner and Kristina Lieberson made it look easy as they ambled through the set. Being relatively new fans of HWGM, we looked for a setlist to share with you. All we found was this list from their recent performance at Bonnarro in Tennessee last June (as compiled by NPR):
"Moon"
"Surprise"
"Collector"
"Casual"
"Only Pieces"
"F.F.A.P."
"Fangela"
"Tunnelvision"
Here We Go Magic's show was pleasing even though the hot weather conditions were less than ideal for an outside show. Bassist, Jen Turner was drenched in sweat from the start of the show. In the hole where Emo's put the stage there is no breeze, hot lights and heavy guitars to swing around. Just describing the scene makes us hungry for more melodic music from the likes of this latest of Brooklyn music buzz worthy bands.

Greg - Jeff Schad with Montauk Music. I'm looking to get you some info about Mandorico, an energetic six piece reggae/Afro-Cuban band playing in Austin in Sept. Please check my site at montauk music dot com or email me at jeff at montaukmusic dot com. Can I send you some info on them and look at getting some coverage of the show? Thank you.
