Want to hear about a cool idea supporting the Austin music scene you can participate in? Austin Music Map is an interactive, community, documentary project by KUTX 98.9, the Association of Independents in Radio and Zeega who are highlighting their project with MapJam on Saturday. The day-long music festival features nine local acts at seven different East Austin venues from noon to 11 p.m. The event is free and open to the public due to support from The City of Austin Music Division and KUTX.
The roster features Examiner favorites, Mother Falcon, Residual Kid and El Tule and other Austin bands that reflect the diversity of musical styles, from orchestral to punk to world music found locally. MapJam allows fans to post photos and sounds to the site map by tagging posts with #AustinMusicMap using Flickr and SoundCloud. Conjunto Los Pinkys play a traditional, Tex-Mex style dance music known as "conjunto." The instrumentation features the button accordion, bajo quinto, electric bass, drums and harmony singing. In the early 90s, the group started as a Bay Area street band lead by Bradley Jaye Williams and was re-formed in Austin, Texas in 1993. The group currently features Isidro Samilpa and Chencho Flores; two musicians from Austin's Chicano music scene whose careers stretch back to the 1950's cantinas of East 6th Street. Residual Kid consists of members Max Redman (age 12), Ben Redman (14), and Deven Ivy (14). Since the late 70s, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Rosie Flores has been an important figure on the alternative country scene in both Austin, TX, and Los Angeles.
