Philm + My Education - Emo's East - Door 8pm (show 9) - FREE
Dave Lombardo's power trio side project Philm headlines a free show at the new Emo's East venue with Austin postrock band, My Education. ME has been selected to perform at next year's SxSW Music Festival. You can view other bands who made the just released, early band list here. The sound and layout of the new venue is impressive. This is a great chance for local music fans to see the venue with an appealing bill without cost.
More on Philm from Emo's calendar page:
"...Tomaselli has come up with a description he likes to use for PHILM's sound. "PHILM's sound is pure and balanced. Hard to describe but unique. I would call it 'novo punk.' We also want to bring the power trio back to life.
PHILM has already played out live, and will continue to do so, in order to further hone the group's direction and approach. And Lombardo explains what fans can expect from the live PHILM experience. "PHILM shifts musically - it can be very intense at times, and then passive and soft, trans-like, then the rhythm shifts and swings as the music changes and molds itself into something people can dance to or bang their head to. I've seen the audience do both at our shows! In Slayer, I focus strictly on the guitar playing. In PHILM, I'm thinking of the power trio. I'm focusing on the bass lines, and the guitars become more of a backdrop or texture of the songs." Tomaselli adds, "Fans can expect a tsunami of sound at every show...that is what we do."
Sleepercar (Jim Ward) + Cowboy and Indian - The ND at 501 Studios - Doors 9pm
Sleepercar is At the Drive In founding member, Jim Ward's alternative country project which makes Austin alt-country act, Cowboy and Indian a natural pairing on the bill. Ward is a busy musician, performing with Sleepercar, recording a solo album while pursuing other projects and collaborations like the single, "Broken Songs" featuring Tegan Quin (Tegan and Sara).

Fun Fun Fun Fest - Auditorium Shores - Noon-10pm
Ocote Soul Sounds - 3:05pm - Orange Stage
Grupo Fantasma member, Adrian Quesada and Martin Perna's (Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra) side project, Ocote Soul Sounds plays a laid-back funky Latin groove that will go nicely will bucolic Fall weather at FFF Fest.
KUT radio on OSS:
Perna and Quesada met by chance through a friend of a friend a few albums into Perna’s Ocote Soul Sounds side-project. But after a few jam sessions, it became obvious that the two operated on the same musical wavelength. Ocote gives the two a chance to experiment with Latin and African rhythms while dabbling in darker melodies and sonic textures that differ from their other projects." -KUT.org
Reggie Watts - 7:15pm - Yellow Stage
Comedian and musician, Reggie Watts is unmistakable with his trademark, giant, sunburst Afro. Bedsides being a talented comedian endorsed by Conan O'Brien and Rolling Stone, Watts is a popular festival musician, appearing at Fusebox, SxSW and Bonnaroo among others. Fans are in for a unique set on Friday according to the artist's own web site:
"Hilarious, brilliant, unpredictable – comedian/musician Reggie Watts is a staple of the international performance scene. Reggie's improvised musical sets are created on-the-spot using only his formidable voice and a looping machine. No two songs are ever the same. An avowed "disinformationist," Reggie loves to disorientate his audiences in the most entertaining way. You may not know what Reggie is going to do, but that's okay – he doesn't either."
Danzig Legacy - 8:15pm - Black Stage
Members of the Misfits and Samhain, bands that pre-date Glenn Danzig's namesake band are headlining the Black Stage Friday night. More from the FFF Fest artist pages:
"Glenn Danzig is a name that permeates, infects, and ultimately makes strong, the very soul of hard rock in the '90s. Through the legendary punk charge of his pre-Danzig outfits Misfits and Samhain, Danzig formed the backbone of today's mosh movement. Into the deep waves of the Danzig catalogue, and you've got a band that has created high-tension hybrids that are still being pondered and quietly adopted throughout today's metal community. Over eight million records sold, and Danzig is about to unleash a multi-media onslaught that will once again find disciples studying the master. And there's more: by now, some DANZIG Fans have already heard the exciting News about the DANZIG LEGACY historic reunion shows, with the original members of Glenn's previous band Samhain joining him onstage, as well as his former bandmate Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein from the original Misfits lineup." - FFF Fest
