Kevin Lytwyn, high bar: Beautiful Tak full to hecht. Kolman! Made it. Nice. Blind to inverts. Double double layout with a step.

Curtis Graves, high bar: Clear hip to hecht. Front stalder, a little struggle to get over. Full twisting double layout with a step forward.

Junior vault:

Kaitlyn Hofland, vault: Yurchenko layout. Second vault must have been a Tsuk layout, unless she did another Yurchenko layout.

Emily Lennon, vault: Handspring front tuck. Handspring front tuck half with a hop.

Anna Gamelo, vault: Yurchenko layout. Nicely landed FTY.

Shae Zamardi, vault: FTY with a step back.

Ellie Black, vault: Handspring front full, hand down. Not enough height. Handspring front pike half out with air to spare and hop back. Nice.

Briannah Tseng, vault: Yurchenko 1.5 with step forward. The only other person to do this in the competition is Dominique Pegg. Very nicely done. Didn't see the second vault, but it was well landed.

Bianca Jordaan, vault: Yurchenko layout with a hop back. Great handspring front tuck with just a small hop.

Sabrina Gill, vault: Excellent FTY. Good bouncy Yurchenko layout with a hop back.

Emma Willis, floor: Full in pike, a little low and stepped forward. Double tuck. Split 1.5.Double full, small hop. Double pike hop forward. Switch.

Sydney Sawa, floor: Double layout! Well well well...OOB though and a little low. Still, good for her. Didn't know she was capable of doing that. 1.5 to front full layout to deer jump. Switch ring, switch half. She's into it today. Showing off the choreo. Tourjete half. You can see easily why Valorie Kondos Field wants her on her team. Double pike. Nice routine.

Kristina Vaculik, floor: Full twisting double tuck with a step back. 1.5 to 2.5, stumble forward but doesn't put hands down. Switch side walkout, switch side half. Double full. A lovely fast tango piece, very dramatic but not particularly heavy. Double pike with a step back. Great ending.

Dominique Pegg, floor: That fun Indian themed routine. 1.5 to double tuck, step back. Stuck full twisting double back -- Yelena Davydova claps. Switch ring, switch side half. Punch front to 2.5, little step. Tourjete half. Double pike with a step back.

Bianca Dancose Giambattisto, beam: Press mount. Front aerial. Side aerial. Side somie. Illusion, great. Switch, scissone. Bhs, layout. Double turn. Straight leg side aerial. Gainer layout off the end.

Junior floor:

Emily Lennon, floor: Double back. 2.5. Double full. "My Drag" is the music. Running front double full. Coach looks happy with that one.

Anna Gamelo, floor: A tango! Double tuck. Double pike, bounce back. She looks ready for more difficult tumbling. Cat leap full, switch. 1.5 to front full layout, landed lock legged but is OK. 2.5 with a step forward.

Natalie Vaculik, floor: Double pike, step back. 1.5 to front full layout. Switch half. Double full. Switch, switch side. 2.5 with a step to the side. Lovely routine. Natalie is a little more powerfully built than her sister.

Men's rings: 1. Lytwyn; 2. Watson; 3. Dowers

3:56 p.m.: Rotation two/three-ish:

Men's pommel horse: I didn't see much of this. Here's what I did see.

Tariq Dowers, pommel horse: Hit routine with handstand pirouetting dismount.

Ken Ikeda, pommel horse: Hit routine, very nice. Definitely the best line of the competition on horse.

Ikeda won pommel horse, with Dowers third. Gafuik won floor, with Watson third (unconfirmed)."It's the day of the junior," men's technical director Jeff Thompson comments.

Men's rings:

Simon Porter, rings: Pull to cross, double front pike, giant, double front tuck. Bent arm press to handstand. Giant. 1.5 twisting double back.

Robert Watson, rings: Planche, iron cross. Straddle sit, press handstand. Front giant, double front pike, double front tuck. Bent arm press to handstand. Giant, double double, just a small hop. Good routine!

Matthew D'Amour, rings: Weaker routine -- ends with double front tuck to front layout full dismount.

Kevin Lytwyn, rings: Nice crisp planche. Double front pike, double front tuck to iron cross. Full twisting double layout with a step back. Very well done.

Trevor McArthur, rings: Iron cross. Planche, a bit high. Front giant. Another planche. Bent arm press to handstand. Double double, too low and put his hands down.

3:20 p.m.: Rotation two:

Senior bars:

Rochelle Hurt, bars: Got lost early in the routine and broke form, but the rest was quite good -- blind, Markelov, full turn, double layout with a step. She has good form and a nice swing.

Gabrielle May, bars: Hecht mount. Blind to piked Jaeger and looks like she hit both heels. Good recovery. Bail, etc. Double pike dismount, nealy stuck. Heels are probably smarting a bit.

Bianca Dancose Giambattisto, bars: Toe on Maloney, bail to Ray, swinging well. Blind to piked Jaeger, toe stalder, full turn. Arabian double front out small step.

Kristina Vaculik, bars: Clear hip hecht to high, stalder full, to Tkatcehv, Geinger, perfect, stalder, bail to Ray, blind, front giant, double front.

Jessica Savona, bars: Hit routine, except that she hit her foot on her Tkatchev. However, this routine had some great, high flying skills, including a Hindorff right off the top, a Shaposhnikova and a full twisting double layout dismount. This girl is someone to watch for in the future.

Dominique Pegg, bars: Stalder full to to toe hecht to high, blind, Jaeger, bail, toe hecht, falls on Tkatchev. Full twisting double back with a step.

Carrina Lo Bello, bars: Jump to high, fall on Jaeger pike. Full, bail, toe stalder, toe hecht to high, blind, double front to her bottom.

Madeline Gardiner, bars: Toe full, blind, Jaeger, good. Stalder, full, toe stalder to bail, Ray, full twisting double tuck with a step to the side.

Junior beam:

Paige Blaney, beam: Tuck up to ahndstand. Switch, scissone. Like her choreo, just interesting stuff. Punch front. Front aerial. Bhs, layout. Sheep. Switch ring. Gainer pike off the end.

Ellie Black, beam: Bhs, layout to two feet. Double turn, nice. Front pike, two steps but OK. Side somie, good. Switch, jump. Punch front, wobble. Running front double full in layout position. Good dismount.

Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, beam: Switch, back tuck. Bhs, layout. Fall on front aerial. Side somie. Like her presentation, there's elegance in her hands and arms and jumps. Wolf. Double tuck, slightly cowboyed, with a hop. Good routine, too bad about the fall.

Natalie Vaculik, beam: Bhs, layout. Switch, back tuck, very precise. Switch side. Wolf, scissone. Side aerial. Roundoff, double full.

Mikaela Gerber, beam: Press handstand to double stag. Full turn in sit position. Switch, back tuck. Front aerial. Bhs layout. Front somie. Wolf, scissone. Bhs, bhs, double full.

Melissa Fontaine, beam: Punch front. Bhs, layout, check. Side aerial. Side somie, wobble. Switch. Scissone, wolf. Front full layout with a step.

3:13 p.m.: I'm not sitting where I can see the scores, but vault I would give to Vaculik. Bars is harder to say...Gill, perhaps? Floor, to me the best routine was no question young Jaylan Birl, a huge tumbling talent for Canada. Gafuik had a lot of difficulty, but he also hopped some of his passes as well. Birl hardly did that.

2:24 p.m.: And here we go! The judges are marching in, followed by the athletes.

Senior Vault:

Dominique Nadeau, vault: FTY, legs apart coming off the horse and step back. Sat down handspring front pike but looked good in the air.

Catherine Dion, vault: FTY, small step back. Came on a bit on the front of the horse, I thought. Tucked Omelianchik, not even close to standing that up. Not enough height.

Gabrielle May, vault: FTY, step forward, not quite enough rotation. Piked Luconi, overrotated and falls to her back.

Madeline Gardiner, vault: Cleanest FTY so far. Just a hop on the landing. Handspring front tuck, good landing, just a small hop.

Kristin Klarenbach, vault: Very good double front pike half out. Very well done. Her coach raises his arms in victory. Good Yurchenko half with a hop forward.

Dominique Pegg, vault: Nice Yurchenko 1.5, step forward. Handspring front pike, well done with a hop forward.

Cassandra Harrison, vault: FTY, two steps back. Handspring front tuck with a hop.

Kristina Vaculik, vault: Good FTY with a small hop back. Great height on her Omelianchik. No problems rotation-wise, just a small hop forward.

Junior Bars:

Taylor Ricci, bars: Jump to high, Tkatchev, full, blind, half, bail to low, clear hip, toe stalder, hecht to high, open double pike.

Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, bars: Jump to high, stalder full, over on handstand and falls.

Briannah Tseng, bars: She hit in prelims here and missed in all-around finals, so it will be interesting to see what she can do here...Jump to high, Tkatchev, OK, then a fall.

Melissa Fontaine, bars: Clear hip, toe hecht to high, full turn, blind, release move maybe, bail, double pike with steps back.

Shae Zamardi, bars: Jump to high, full turn, Tkatchev. Pal. clear hip, toe stalder to high. Double front. Great routine.

Sabrina Gill, bars: Jump to high, stalder pike to Pak, Ray, stalder blind, half turn to Tkatchev, full turn, double layout with a step forward. Very good. She's coming along well.

Natalie Vaculik, bars: Geinger, bail, toe stalder, toe hecht, blind, double pike step forward. Lovely work.

Anna Gamelo, bars: Catches foot on Tkatchev,m blind, half turn, bail, long handstand but over, toe hecht to high, full turn, double pike with a step back.

Men's floor exercise:

Tariq Dowers, floor: Full twisting double back, stuck. Layout, front full layout. One Russian circle. Arabian tuck, dive roll. Double full, small bounce back. 2.5 with step to the side.

Jayd Lukenchuk, floor: Arabian double pike, OOB. 2.5 to front half, tucked. 1.5 to front full tucked with step back. Russians. Press. Front double full. Arabian double front with a small hop.

Jaylan Birl, floor: Arabian double pike half out, awesome. 2.5 to front half layout, stuck. Press to planche handstand. Roundoff, double full, stuck. 1.5 to front full layout, smallest of hops. Stuck full twisting double tuck. Great routine!

Jackson Payne, floor: 1.5 to Rudi, clean. Half twisting Thomas. Double full, stuck. Russians. Whip half, front full with a hop. 2.5 with a step forward.

Kevin Lytwyn, floor: Double double tucked, stuck. Didn't see second pass. Tucked Thomas. Press. Looked a little off balance in the corner for just a second there. Whip half to double front, nice. Stumble and hand (and knee) down on 2.5 twister to end.

Ian Galvan, floor: Arabian double pike, small hop forward. Front double full to punch front. Double front side pass, awesome. Press to planche handstand. Front full, I think. Double full. 2.5, just a small hop. Nice routine.

Hugh Smith, floor: Arabian double front half out, I think. 1.5 to front full layout. Press to planche handstand. Good 2.5 to end. I missed part of this routine...but it was good.

Nathan Gafuik, floor: Arabian double front, hop, deer jump. Front double full to tucked front full. Randi, good. Press handstand planche. Tucked Thomas. 1.5 to Rudi maybe? Didn't quite see. Dismounts with 2.5 twist.

Robert Watson, floor: 1.5 to Rudi. 2.5. Missed the first part of the routine -- sorry, Robert! What I saw was good...

2:15 p.m.: The athletes will be marching in shortly.

Annoucement: Cirque! Athletes who dream of joining the circus -- Rick McCharles of Gymnastics Coaching fame will be hosting an open audition for Cirque du Soleil tomorrow morning (Sunday) at 9 a.m. in the training gym at the Tournament Capital Centre here at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. All are welcome.

KAMLOOPS, B.C., 1:34 p.m.: Dominique Pegg, warming up on balance beam and wearing the oh-so-Canadian red shiny long sleeved leotard with a silver maple leaf, just landed a very nice roundoff, double back off beam.

Kristina Vaculik follows up with her Rulfova on beam. She looks great doing this skill -- very clean, very calm, like all of her gymnastics.

Did I somehow MISS the web broadcast's showing of Vaculik's bars and vault, or did they actually not show her on those events? You'd think they would want to show their senior WAG champion...

  • Blythe 2 years ago

Shana -- The thing is there's like six things happening at once in this gym -- MAG and WAG, as well as T&T and double mini trampoline. In Canada, T&T is as important as artistic gymnastics, because T&T is where the World and Olympic medals have come from for the past several years, Kyle Shewfelt not withstanding. So the web broadcasters have to mix in those athletes, and as a result I guess it means cutting some MAG and WAG. It's possible that Vaculik was performing at the same time as a T&T Olympic medalist. I don't know that for sure, though. -- Blythe

    Thanks for the extra perspective.

I was sitting there wondering how she wasn't in any finals, when I knew she must have been...then there she was winning gold when they showed the medal presentations!

It was especially surprising that they didn't know Vaculik on vault because they showed 3 different girls splatting on their second vaults but not someone that clearly must have gone clean through both of them. I suppose I'll have to youtube her later.
