October of this year will mark the 8th anniversary of The Sacramento Horror Film Festival (SHFF) but horror fans won’t have to wait until then for big screen, indie film fright. SHFF’s growing popularity has led their creators to sponsoring and/hosting many other related events throughout the year such as screenings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and even a Xmas holiday horror show. And now, for the first time, this Friday night, SHFF will present their Love Horror Film Festival. The heart of this festival will be the screening of the best short films of past Sacramento Horror Film Festivals, but several new shorts will also be screened and a selection will be made for a co-host for the annual event in October.

The Love Horror Film Festival starts at 8 p.m. on Friday with its “Slasher Vs. Zombie Challenge Screening” of new short films. Seven short films of the slasher and zombie genres will be shown. At 10 p.m. SHFF’s “Best of Short Film” program begins. The program will feature 11 short films selected from past SHFF events. These movies range from as little as 4 to 16 minutes each and include “Mutantland”, a horror music video in narration entitled “Horror of Our Love”, and “Bandaged” which was “voted most shocking film ever played at the Sacramento Horror Film Festival” and is “not for the weak at heart!”

While past SHFF events have been introduced by long time professional horror hosts such as TV-syndicated “Cinema Insomnia”’s Mr. Lobo and Trash Film Orgy’s Queen of Trash, Friday’s event will give four aspiring horror hosts an opportunity to use their skills. These four hosts will compete for selection of co-host for this year’s SHFF by introducing the films. The contestants for this “horror host challenge” will be Kitty Vamp, duo Brian and David Phillips who are creators of the special effects documentary “Beers and Fears”, indie film actress and model Jeslen Mishelle, and duo Jamie DeWolf and Sidney Sin.

Also throughout the event there will be live entertainment such as horror themed dance and burlesque performances by Croalia, Raven LaRoux, Jezebelle’s Army and Christa Quinn.

The frightening fun starts 8 p.m. Friday June 27th at the Historical Colonial Theatre, 3522 Stockton Boulevard in Sacramento.

Some words of warning: SHFF’s banner for the event on their website reads 9 p.m. as the start time, but this is an error as stated on the organizers’ Facebook forum. Also, to get a better idea of the films that will be shown, see the event’s trailer at SHFF’s website, but the trailer may be as graphic as the films themselves. Therefore this event is not for the squeamish.

Also at the Colonial Theatre: Saturday at 10 p.m. there will be a screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” hosted and pantomimed by Amber’s Sweets. For tickets and more information on both events, please visit the Sacramento Horror Film Festival’s website.
