Live action 'Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers' film in development

On Friday, January 31 The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Disney is developing a live action film based on the cartoon "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," two adventurous chipmunks who took down evil villains with the help of their friends. The film is being planned as a live action film with computer generated animation will be helmed by commercial director Robert Rugan.

The characters were created in 1943 by Walt Disney Productions and appeared as minor characters for almost four decades. One of the characters is a logical chipmunk with a small black nose named Chip, who is usually dressed like Indiana Jones. The other is a dim witted chipmunk who wears Hawaiian shirts named Dale and is similar to Tom Selleck's character from "Magnum P.I."

An animated television series called "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers" aired in 1989 and 1990 and featured the two chipmunks forming a detective agency and solve mysteries with their friends Zipper, Monterey Jack, and Gadget Hackwrench. It's unclear if these characters would appear in the film, but it's possible they will if the plot remains similar.

The pair have appeared in over twenty different animated short films, and are frequently seen in cartoons as being rivals with Donald Duck and Pluto. They also appeared in comic books as supporting characters in the 1960s and got their own comic book release until the 1980s. The voice of Chip has been done by Tress MacNeille and the voice of Dale has been done by Corey Burton since 1989. Several actors previously voiced the characters and sometimes the voices were sped up to achieve the correct sound.

The film project is being developed by Mandeville Films which is a Disney production company run by Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman. Alexander Young will also serve as an executive producer. There is currently no timetable for then the film could begin production or receive a release date.
