Sony closed out today's long line of press conferences with a two hour presentation earlier this evening. Among the new titles revealed was LittleBigPlanet 3, which we had been hearing vague reports of since last year. The latest installment, which will be coming to the PlayStation 4 later this year, will be bringing the same colorful platforming that fans have come to expect from the series, while also adding a few new characters for Sackboy (or Sackgirl) to interact with.
Each of the three new playable characters from the mysterious planet of Bunkum will have their own unique abilities and characteristics. Oddsock is a dog-like SackCreature who has the ability to wall jump, and can run faster than a regular SackPerson. Toggle is the strongest of the characters, and has the ability to weigh platforms down with his incredible size, or to shrink himself to tiny proportions. The final new character is Swoop, a SackBird with the ability to fly. Swoop can also carry the other characters with him, though he can only manage Toggle when he's in his shrunken state. Understanding these four characters will prove important for navigating some of the game's levels, and looks like a great way to rework the franchise's multiplayer.
One of the most important aspects of LittleBigPlanet is its focus on user-created levels. Sony has announced that all of this content will be available to play on LittleBigPlanet 3 at launch, which is sure to please the series' dedicated community. It is also expected that users will be able to customize the new playable characters just like they can with SackBoy, though game footage hasn't shown this feature off yet.
Details regarding the game's story are still scarce, though we did get a brief look at Newton, the game's new villain. There also hasn't been any confirmation as to whether Stephen Fry will be reprising his role as the game's narrator, though we sincerely hope he is. LittleBigPlanet 3 hasn't been given a release date yet, but will be available to PS4 owners before Christmas of this year.
