Little Tujunga Canyon Loop Training Ride

Throughout the year, endurance cyclists are training in preparation for various advanced-level cycling events offered in California.

Some will ride double centuries in hopes of obtaining a Triple Crown, while others will ride the King of the Mountain series. Then, there are the “weekend warriors,” cyclists who seek challenging rides on the weekend without an end goal in sight. For all of these endurance athletes, training rides are invaluable to their efforts.

A perfect ride for cyclists seeking smooth roads, mountainous climbs and stunning views is the Little Tujunga Canyon loop through the Angeles National Forest and down into Tujunga Valley. Small groups of riders are often seen along this canyon, riding to gain both miles and elevation.

The 65 mile loop is simple and easy to follow. Cyclists may park their cars at the Lakeview Terrace Recreation Center in Lake View and ride west along Foothill Blvd. to Osborne Street which becomes Little Tujunga Canyon Road.

The canyon continues up through the Angeles National Forest and hosts some of the prettiest mountain views in the area. Motorists use this road as well, so it is important that cyclists ride single file and carry cell phones. The area is also remote, so riding in pairs or groups is wise.

Once over the initial climb of Little Tujunga, there is a brief descent before a small section of steeper grades begins. After this final climb, there is a full descent down into Tujunga Valley alongside ranches and fields often full of horses. Little Tujunga Canyon becomes Sand Canyon, intersecting with Soledad Canyon at the bottom.

Once down into Tujunga Valley, there are fast food establishments and gas stations where cyclists can fill their water bottles and find food. However, anyone riding through the remote canyon should carry water and fuel with them, and on a hot day, an extra water bottle or camel-back would be necessary.

This route is difficult and advanced, only recommended for seasoned cyclists. But for those seeking excellent climbs with views, this ride is a winner. It tops out at close to 5,600 feet of elevation gain, and on a windy day, is an arduous albeit satisfying undertaking.
