Little pinwheel hearts for Valentine’s Day

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and people would be making reservations to their favorite restaurant and planning on a special date night. Years ago, after a night long unsuccessful attempt in Phoenix to try and find a place to eat out on Valentine’s day, my husband and I decided to make it a homely affair.  To read more about our (mis) adventure in the Phoenix East valley all those years ago read last year’s post at  http://www.examiner.com/indian-food-in-phoenix/valentine-s-day-ideas-for-great-home-celebration. Since then we have always stayed home on Valentine’s Day and made our own special arrangements. Sometimes we hold special spa sessions and order pizza, other times we rent a couple of movies and watch them (with hubby giving in to my preference for romantic comedies over action flicks).

In the last two years, my daughter has started making a special dessert for Valentine’s Day and that has made the occasion all the more special. Last year we made heart shaped quiches  http://www.examiner.com/indian-food-in-phoenix/easy-heart-shaped-quiches-for-valentine-s-day  We also made pizza with pepperoni hearts and arrows and strawberry delight. You can get the recipe at http://www.examiner.com/indian-food-in-phoenix/valentine-s-day-ideas-for-great-home-celebration  This year we are planning on little heart shaped pinwheels. They are super easy to make and all you need is some store bought crescent bread dough, some sauce and meat of your choice. You can get real creative with the meat. Use deli ham if you are in a hurry. I used Indian food inspired chicken tikka and some leftover Chinese kung pao chicken.

Little pinwheel hearts

Ingredients

  • 1 box of Pillsbury crescent
  • 1 tbsp tomato basil pasta sauce
  • 6 slices of cheese singles (cheddar or American, cut in half)
  • 2” pieces of cooked meat of your choice (ham, chicken)

Method

Unroll the crescent rolls from the box. Now lay them on either a long piece of parchment paper or on a flour-dusted surface. Cut each crescent dough in half lengthwise so now you have 12 pieces of long dough strips. Put 1 tsp of tomato sauce on each strip. Next top with half a slice of cheese singles, then with your meat of choice. Roll each dough strip starting from one end till you have little pinwheels. Press the edges and shape them like little hearts. Repeat the process till you have 12 heart shaped pinwheels. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Bake the pinwheels at 375 F for 10-12 minutes. Some of the cheese might ooze out and it is ok. Serve warm as an appetizer.
