The Little League World Series 2013 schedule yields two championship games on Saturday, Aug. 24 with the first the International Championship between Japan and Mexico. After the conclusion of that game at Lamade, a U.S. Championship game will be held featuring Westport, Conn. vs. Chula Vista, Calif. in a battle to make it to the finals. The winning team plays the International winner on Sunday. There will be LLWS live online score updates and televised coverage of the game.
According to the Aug. 23 report from LittleLeague.org, New England orchestrated an impressive comeback against Sammamish, Wash. in their game Friday, winning it 14-13. Westport had a seven-run comeback over 10-innings, including an extra-inning walk off to win it. Chad Knight became the late inning hero, hitting a two-out, two-strike, walk-off base hit to left field to score Christopher Drbal from third. Overall, Knight had two RIB and scored two runs on his 2-4 day at the plate. He said of his big walk-off hit to win the game:
"Going up to the plate I was a little nervous, but I realized this was just like any other at-bat. I just went up there and tried to put the ball in play.”
The game accounted for the third most combined runs and third most combined hits between two teams in Little League World Series history. With the victory, New England gets to face a Chula Vista, Calif. team that is undefeated in LLWS play at 3-0. The two teams lasted played each other on Wednesday, Aug. 21, with Chula Vista winning it 6-3. Ironically, that game included an extra inning three-run home run by pitcher Grant Holman to break a 3-3 tie and give Chula Vista the win.
A win today will put the West or New England team into the finals against either Mexico or Japan. The losing team today will play in the third place game held tomorrow before the championship on ABC.
Today's Westport vs. Chula Vista Little League World Series game will begin at 3:30 p.m. EST, barring any sorts of delays or extension of the International Championship game. ABC will televise the game on local affiliate stations around the country. While WatchESPN/ESPN3 have been live streaming previous games from the LLWS, today's matchup is not listed for their online feeds. However, fans can keep an eye on the score live online via ESPN.com or the LLWS site here.
