The Chihuahua is a very popular breed of dog although they are not necessarily a good breed for every pet owner. Just what makes this little guy such a special breed to many? It could be its tiny size, making it the perfect take-along type of pet; the way it also loves to find the closest lap to snuggle and cuddle. For more information on the personality, needs and antics of the Chihuahua, you can contact your local Rockford-area Humane Society as listed below or one closest to your home.
The Chihuahua is a tiny, bold breed of dog with a personality that is larger than life. Most often, pet owners of a Chihuahua have more than one! Like potato chips, it is frequently difficult to stop at just one. When unfamiliar with the breed, this dog comes with the persona as being a yappy ankle-biter, although there is so much more to this little guy. If not trained properly as a tiny puppy, you can have just that, but you may also note a fun dog with a lot of personality. They can be on the serious, aggressive side to very calm or nervous but always very loyal and devoted to their humans.
Often times, pet owners do not realize the Chihuahua requires immediate obedience and socialization training because of its size but this is such a myth. This little dog needs just as much training as any other dog or you could be creating a small monster in the home. Chihuahuas love to love and be loved, are quite active and love to play with toys and bones. However, they have no particular exercise requirements since they can meet those needs just playing around the home. This little dog has a long lifespan; often 15 plus years.
Chihuahuas are often referred to as apple heads due to the shape of their heads, round and with erect pointed ears. They come in two varieties; the every popular smooth-coat and the gorgeous little long coat types. There are no limits to the colors they can be found in. Size varies but typically ranges about 6 to 9 inches tall at the withers and 2 to 5 pounds in weight.
Chihuahuas fit well in any type of living environment from apartment dwelling, condos, townhomes and other home atmospheres. Although they do not do well with young children because of their size, they are excellent with older children, all other adults and seniors . For ease of care for some, the Chihuahua can be either paper-trained or litter box trained; a big plus when living in areas with inclement weather.
The Chihuahua is a relatively healthy breed of dog but you may need to be away of some conditions that can affect your pet, such as hypoglycemia, luxating patellas, hydrocephalus, heart disease, urolithiasis, cryptorchidism, anal sac disease, lens luxation, melanoma and glaucoma. This is not to say your dog will contract any of these conditions and regular vet visits will ensure a healthy pet. Hypoglycemia is very common due to low blood sugar because of its tiny size which can be remedied in its early days with a drop of honey, twice daily with meals. Otherwise, your pup should be happy and healthy.
If you have a Chihuahua, or two or three, enjoy all the benefits and love they can bring into your home and life. It takes special people to own and care for this special and unique breed that is small in size but big on love and loyalty.
