Little Anthony and The Imperials headline Night of Legends at House of Blues

Little Anthony and The Imperials (LAI) will headline a Night of Legends at House of Blues (located in the Showboat), Saturday, Feb. 19, 2012 at 8 p.m., featuring some of the greatest artists in the history of rock and roll.

Back in 1957, Clarence Collins, Tracy Lord, Nathaniel Rodgers and Ronald Ross came together as the Chesters.  They became The Imperials and when Anthony Gourdine, formerly with the Duponts joined as lead vocalist, the signature name came together.  Anthony Gourdine left in 1961 to pursue a solo career, but returned in 1963, thus completing the group's "classic" lineup of Gourdine, Clarence Collins, Ernest Wright and Sammy Strain.

The group made two appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and performed on all the big musical TV shows of the day, including Shindig!, Hullabaloo, Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall, The Tonight Show and Dick Clark's American Bandstand.  (Continues below)

Here's a few of the LAI songs you may remember. . .

  • Tears on My Pillow
  • Two People in the World
  • Shimmy, Shimmy, KoKo Bop
  • Goin' Out of My Head
  • On the Outside Lookin' In
  • Hurt So Bad (featured video clip)

The group broke up in 1971.  However, the four originals reunited in 1992 and toured until Sammy Strain retired in 2004.

As of 2011, the Imperials are (along with the Dells), one of few 1950s-era R&B groups still touring with the great majority of their original members (Gourdine, Collins and Wright). They are also one of the very few late 1950s-based groups to successfully re-invent themselves and go on to maintain consistent recording success well into the 1960s/1970s.

In 2012, LAI is Gourdine, Collins, Wright and Robert DeBlanc.  In 2008, they released an album, You'll Never Know, their first in many years.
