Literature soars at the Flyover Film Festival

Louisville's Flyover Film Festival takes off this weekend, June 10-12, with screenings taking place all over town. The Louisville Film Society puts on the event, which is ripe with screenings, workshops and forums for all ages. The 3rd annual festival features a couple of movies with a basis in literature.

The Lie is based on T.C. Boyle's short story of the same name. It is directed by actor Joshua Leonard, who you may remember from The Blair Witch Project. He will be joined by co-star Jess Weixler in a question-and-answer session after the film, along with the film's editor and Louisville native, Greg O'Bryant. The film centers around a couple of young idealists, who are forced towards realism as they grow older and as a lie to get out of work ends up changing everything. The Lie will be showcased Friday, June 10 at 9 p.m. at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. Check out the film's official website at http://www.theliemovie.com/.

Another book-based festival feature is Odysseus in America, influenced from the pages of psychiatrist Jonathan Shay's well-chronicled, Odysseus in America: Combat Trauma and the Trials of Homecoming. The book and documentary reveal the connection between modern and ancient soldiers, winding through history all the way back to Homer's Odysseus. Narrated by Academy Award nominee David Strathairn, the film shows that the ancients had an astounding grasp on the psychological impacts of war, an issue we seem less aware of today. Through archival footage and interviews with soldiers, director Charles Berkowitz portrays just how difficult it is to get integrated back into American society after returning from the battlefield. Berkowitz will speak following the film, which shows at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Speed Art Museum. Visit http://www.odysseusinamericafilm.com to read more about the documentary.
