Working on literacy with children on beginning reading skills is as easy as talking with them as you spend time with them. The first three articles on literacy covered phonics, concepts of print and vocabulary. This article focuses on fluency.

The 5 Pillars of Reading include Phonemic Awareness, Phonics and Concepts of Print, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. Read aloud with animation. Have fun, your child will be learning fluency just by listening to your voice.
Fluency is the ability to read with proper phrasing and expression. Fluency activities:
- Sing favorite songs.
- Make your own books of favorite rhymes, poems, and songs for children to practice “reading.”
- Use expression when reading and have your child repeat phrases or sentences.
- Point out punctuation marks that aid in expressions such as question marks, exclamation points, and quotation marks.
- Demonstrate how your voice changes as you read questions or exclamations.
