Literacy foundation, READ3Zero, publishes work of 43 students

Melissa Williams, Houston children’s book author and founder of READ3Zero, is working diligently with children to inspire a love for reading.

Her latest mission celebrated 43 students’ artwork and stories that were professionally published by READ3Zero, Williams’ children’s literacy foundation. This 3rd Annual Anthology, “I Write: Short Stories For Kids, by Kids, included stories and illustrations.

Williams is the author of Iggy the Iguana, Turtle Town and Little Miss Molly books. She is also a former educator and counselor. Her goal is instill confidence in young children through reading and writing.

READ3Zero has sold over 400 books and continues to push for more children to join their writing contest. Her organization is determined to see more contestants enter their stories. Currently, children from California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Michigan and others were entered in the contest. The upcoming fourth edition of the book is open to high school students for the first time.

Williams’ devotion to literacy is her passion. Crediting positive self-esteem and confidence inspires her. Developing READ3Zero was an easy choice for Williams.

“I believe that literature is an amazing gift to us. It opens up our world to not only life-long learning, but also a world of emotion, dreams and creativity. I get to witness a natural love for stories. Kids are naturally creative. I wanted to build a foundation that represented opportunity through daily reading habits and story writing. We have definitely seen an increase in individual and school participation,” she said.

Seeing children’s interest in the I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids publishing contest is the most exciting part for Williams and READ3Zero.

“We continue to hear back from parents and kids. Each of our authors and artists has reflected an increased positive self-esteem. Many of our kids go off to pursue more goals. The feedback from parents has really kept us going. I truly believe that early successes in life are very important in shaping a well-rounded and confident young adult,” Williams said.
