March is reading month! Throughout the whole month, teachers, children and parents celebrate with special reading promotions and activities. The Early Childhood Literacy Coalition of Greater Lansing chooses to celebrate reading by sponsoring two weeks of free literacy events for young children and their families. The excitement will begin with a free Literacy Kick-Off, with a stage show and free activities at the Hannah Center in East Lansing on Sunday March 17. From 1:00 to 3:30 in the afternoon families are invited to enjoy literacy activities, get a free book and see their favorite characters.
On the stage, Tunes ‘N Tales by Tricia will perform her interactive stage show at 2:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon. In the story corner will be expert storytellers Karri Korroch and Jean Bolley. In the gym, your youngster can meet several of their favorite book characters including Clifford, Curious George, Olivia, Pete the Cat and Maisey. Make sure to have your camera handy for great shots of the kids and the characters. A variety of free children’s activities related to the characters will delight little ones so much they won’t know they are learning.
The Literacy Kick-Off Event is sponsored by the Early Childhood Literacy Coalition which includes CACS Head Start, Capital Area District Libraries, Clinton Great Start, Delta Township District Library, DeWitt District Library, East Lansing Public Library, Eaton Great Start, Ingham County Health Department//Family Outreach Services, Ingham Great Start, and WKAR/Ready To Learn.
After the literacy event kick off, look through the schedule for even more great activities scattered over two weeks and four counties. During the day, story characters will attend playgroups, story times and preschool events. In the evenings, look for characters at a variety of Family Fun Nights and preschool events. See the Everyday Moments flier for details on literacy events nearest you or featuring your favorite character.
