It was revealed earlier this week that 380 million eggs that were shipped out across the country by an Iowa farm were recalled due to Salmonella contamination. In total, 13 brands of eggs were recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination. "We checked with local stores including Wegmans and Tops and so far it appears that none of their inventory of eggs are affected by the Salmonella contamination" says WHEC News 10- Rochester, NY. Regardless of the fact that no recalled eggs have been found at local Wegmans or Tops store, it is advised that everyone still take caution and double check the egg cartons in their fridge before eating them.
There is a very quick and simple way to determine if you have a carton of recalled eggs in your refrigerator. If you look at the end of your egg carton there will be two important numbers above or below the sell by date that you will want to pay attention to. The first is called the "Plant Number", this number starts with the letter P and is followed by four digits. The Plant Numbers that are known to be affected by Salmonella contamination are: 1026, 1413 and 1946. The other number you will want to look at is the Julian Date which is a 3 digit date code that is printed after the Plant Number. The Julian Date codes for the recalled eggs are between the range of 136 and 225. Please refer to the image for a visual representation of where to find the Plant Number and Julian Date code.
The alphabetical list of brands that are part of the egg recall are:
- Albertson
- Boomsma
- Dutch Farm
- Farm Fresh
- Hillandale
- Kemps
- Lucerne
- Lund
- Mountain Dairy
- Ralph's
- Shoreland
- Sunshine
- Trafficanda
If you happen to find one of the brands of recalled eggs contaminated by Salmonella you should take them back to the store you bought them from and they will gladly provide you with a full refund.
