Bestselling author Lisa See, who has mesmerized readers with historical novels like The Shanghai Girls and Peony in Love, has written another fascinating tale centering on a group of young Asian women. The new book, titled China Dolls: A Novel, begins in late 1930’s San Francisco with World War II approaching. The story centers on three very different girls who become unlikely companions, developing a rare and valuable bond with one another which will help each of girls through challenges that await them.

Aspiring dancer Grace Lee is a first generation Chinese American who has traveled to San Francisco from her home in the Midwest, with dreams of a career in show business. Helen Fong lives with her strict and very traditional family in Chinatown. And then there is the wild, rebellious Ruby Tom, pushing the limits of convention and determined to realize her ambitions.

As the three women struggle to make their dreams come true, life is further complicated by the outbreak of war. This is a book about ambition, friendship, overcoming obstacles and dark secrets while being torn between two cultures and often feeling like an outsider.

Lisa See, the daughter of novelist Carolyn See, has written many inspiring novels over the years, about Chinese and Chinese-Americans. She penned a family memoir in the 1990’s, On Gold Mountain. The memoir talks, in part, about the author’s great-great-grandfather who came to America in 1867 and worked with herbal remedies, as well as his son who became a powerful California businessman and broke the law by marrying a Caucasian woman.

In addition to Peony in Love and Shanghai Girls, See has also authored Snow Flower and Secret Fan (now a motion picture); the Red Princess Mystery series and a sequel to Shanghai Girls called Dreams of Joy.
