Lisa Loeb's presence electrified the Tonight Show. She, with Chad Gilbert, jammed on the fresh new title-track "No Fairy Tale," from Loeb's new album, presenting her magnificent music with newly found levels of pop-punk glory. The special conversation continues now:
W.E. How did you first meet Ethan Hawke? What proved the best aspect of how this connection impacted the narrative of your musical journey to number one and beyond? Please share with readers the story of the sequence that occurred, leading to a number one hit, to being key to the soundtrack of many people's favorite movie? What was the experience like for you in "reality," as seen with the clear vision of now?
L.L. I first met Ethan Hawke through my friend Josh Hamilton from Brown University. They'd just filmed the movie "Alive" and were hanging out with a lot of the actors at that time in NYC, in the early 1990's right after I graduated from college. Ethan and I were part of a loosely knit group of actors, musicians, writers, artists who all hung out in NYC, and it turned out, he was also my neighbor across the street in the Village. We all supported each other, and, as a friend and fan, he asked for a copy of my songs to play for Ben Stiller, who directed and acted in the movie "Reality Bites." I think the success of my song "Stay (I Missed You)," (the song that was chosen for the soundtrack of the movie) was hopefully due to the fact that people connected to the song.
I also think the success was due to Ethan's connection to the song - a famous actor directing the video, and even more so, directing a one-take video, which was really original at the time. Of course, I would've liked people to see that I played with a band, instead of just looking like a singer, but in the end, the video concept was so strong that it told the story well, in a really intimate way. At the time I felt like I was working so long and hard in my path as a professional musician and having the song become a success seemed to fit in, maybe bigger than I'd expected, but now I also see that it was unusual for an opportunity to come up and for it to work out as well as it did.
