Saturday's news analysis of Hollywood acquisitions have fans reeling, looking for positive news about their favorite Twilight stars. The news that was almost overlooked, sandwiched between awards shows, was that Lionsgate has acquired Summit Entertainment. The purchase includes the rights to The Twilight Saga.
Geeks of Doom, explained their astonishment, now, let us share ours. It is amazing that any company wanting profit would let go of Twilight (see photos) rights which includes possible residual income for years. Especially given the stated intent of Stephanie Meyers to leave the door slightly cracked open to future possibilities. Just a short time ago in a red carpet interview Stephanie said,
"NO, every now and then I tinker with old manuscripts (Twilight), I’ve been doing comedies and stuff and its nice change. My mother would love for me to do that (write more Twilight stuff), I just have to get to place where I can write it.”
Not quite closing the door solidly behind her, Meyer’s has left just a crack open for a slight breeze to come along and push the door open. Witness influence and dedication of the fan base for Twilight, and the mighty wind might start pushing very soon. Do not underestimate the popularity of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. The vampires and the werewolf trio are still a major draw wherever they appear.
The purchase price of $412.5 million plus the debt load includes projection of future revenue at double purchase price for future revenue on just the one film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. News from various sources state, that Lionsgate is eager to continue the Twilight series. February 11, 2011 is the expected release date of the last film of the series, TheTwilight Saga: Breaking Dawn 1.
Smart executives will possibly start the fan base to work its magic or figure how to capture even more revenue from the existing movies. We have all seen in the past special re-releases jazzed up with special inclusions to a DVD set. For now Twi-hard fans will have to suffice with looking for glimpses of their favorite stars on red carpet events and talk shows. After all, wasn’t it just one short year ago that the Twilight darlings received People’s Choice Awards?
