Lions' playoff dreams kicked to death on Monday Night

After the Lions completely blew their game against the Tampa Bay Bucs, instead of doing my usual game review I just aired my grievances with the team because I was quite irked. I kind of feel like doing that after Monday night's game against the Ravens as well. It certainly feels apt. There is much to be disappointed in, frustrated in, and annoyed about. Perhaps it is time for me to once again call for the Detroit Lions to be disbanded and for Ford Field to be turned into a roller disco. It would certainly bring a lot more joy to the Motor City than the Lions seem to be. Plus, it could keep Jim Schwartz in work. I think he may be looking for a job in the not too distant future.

Let me just go over the game in brief. First, you probably know how important this game was for the Lions. The Bears won. The Packers won. The Lions basically needed to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. A loss would leave them needing to win twice and for the Packers and Bears to both lose once, and keep in mind they play one another in the final game of the season. So yeah, Detroit needed a win and, spoiler alert, they did not get it.

Oh, things started off fine, with the Lions marching down the field and getting a touchdown run from Reggie Bush. Then things fell apart. Calvin Johnson dropped two easy catches that ended drives. Justin Tucker kicked three field goals in the second quarter to give the Ravens the lead. Baltimore was leading until late, but then the Lions managed to score with Matthew Stafford throwing a touchdown pass to Joseph Fauria to make it 16-15. They went for two, but Stafford's throw to Megatron was poor and it did not work out.

The Ravens found themselves facing a 61-yard field goal, and Justin Tucker hit it. It was his sixth made kicks in six attempts. Stafford threw a pick. The game ended. Baltimore won 18-15.

On the one hand, the Lions, shorthanded in the secondary, held the Ravens to six field goal attempts. They did not make it into the end zone one. Three of them were long field goals. I mean, if you were to tell me that a team needed to make a 61-yarder to beat the Lions, I'd feel pretty alright about that. It is sort of fluky that it happened. It still is a bummer the Lions lost, because every time they lose is a disappointment, but, I mean, was this all so bad?

Not in the abstract, but this game was not played in the abstract. Stafford went 18-for-34 for 235 yards, one touchdown, and three picks. One wasn't his fault. Two were awful. Johnson had those two bad drops. The Lions took some bad penalties. The refs made a bunch of bad calls, but most of them went against Detroit. That's just salt in the wounds. The Lions were doing a fine job of ruining this for themselves. They didn't need the officials' help.

Basically, the playoff dream is dead for Detroit. I could still see them going 9-7, but 8-8 is more likely. Hey, that doubles their wins from last year, but the Lions committed the error of giving their fans playoff hope. Then they blew it up, the maniacs. This could cost Schwartz his job, and perhaps Martin Mayhew. Stafford is going to be viewed negatively because of this. He could become the new Tony Romo, and that is a tedious thing to be.

Before the season, I figured the Lions would go 7-9, and 8-8 would have felt pretty alright to me. But then the Bucs loss happened. And the Eagles loss in the snow. And now this Ravens loss, on primetime, on Monday night. A dude kicked a 61-yarder and beat the Lions. This is the end.
