Lionel Holllins will interview with Los Angeles Lakers

Former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins is scheduled to interview for the Los Angeles Lakers vacant head coaching job sometime before the end of the month, like May 28 or 29, according to sources on May 25.

Hollins, who will also interview with the Cleveland Cavaliers, is getting more attention as a candidate following the Memphis Grizzlies firing CEO Jason Levien. Hollins. In his final three years as head coach of the Grizzlies, Hollins reached the playoffs three times – including a trip to the Western Conference finals and conference semifinals. Overall, he is 214-201 in seven seasons as a head coach.

Hollins' history of strong defensive preparation and results, which the Lakers desperately need after being under the direction of “no-defense” Mike D’Antoni for the past two years. The Lakers ranked 29th in the NBA in defense last year, surrendering 109.2 points a game.

The Lakers are looking for a proven coach with a winning record. Former Laker player Byron Scott and former Laker coach Mike Dunleavy have already interviewed with the team.

Scott, 53, has a career record of 416-521 in 13 seasons as a coach. He was fired by theCleveland Cavaliers after going 24-58 during the 2012-13 season but had major success before that, guiding the then-New Jersey Nets to back-to-back NBA Finals in 2002 (when they lost to the Lakers) and 2003. He was the NBA's coach of the year in 2007-08 for guiding the New Orleans Hornets to a 56-26 record.

Dunleavy, 60, built a reputation as one of the league's more innovative tacticians in his career. He has 17-years experience as a head coach, with his last stop being with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2010, and possesses a .461 career winning percentage.
