On Wednesday, March 6 an intern at Cat Haven, an animal park in Dunlap, California was fatally attacked by a lion.
Dianna Hanson, 24., died at the scene after being attacked by a four year old African lion named Cous Cous. Fresno County Sheriff’s Lt. Bob Miller stated that in an attempt to save Hanson, police shot and killed the lion.
Paul Hanson, Dianna’s father, said that his daughter “was very excited” to be working at the animal park. “It was just a dream job for her.”
Cat Haven opened in 1993 and is home to exotic species such as Bengal tigers, jaguars and leopards. Controversy surrounded the police officers for shooting the lion.
Actress Tippi Hedren who is Melanie Griffith’s mother, said it was not the lion’s fault. The attack “wasn’t the lion’s fault. It’s the human’s fault always.”
Humane Society Vice President Nicole Paquette weighed in on the tragic death. She said the incident “should have never happened. These are big cats that are extremely dangerous and they placed a volunteer in the actual cage with a wild animal.”
