LinkedIn Tune-up 2014

At a recent human resources event I was speaking with a recruiter about an executive who was considering leaving his company for a new position. He immediately asked me his name and he looked it up on LinkedIn. He wasn’t impressed with the profile. It reminded me how important LinkedIn is in the job search. There have been so many articles written my so many people including me on how to use LinkedIn, so nothing I am going to tell you is new. I just want to remind you of what you need to do to kick off the new year. It’s a simple to do list.
1. Review your profile. Make sure that your profile defines who you are and what you offer. What you say about yourself should include specific skills. You can include your self- evaluation of your personal attributes, but if it is backed up by recommendations by others which confirm your skills and attributes, it has more clout.
2. Review the groups you belong to. Make sure that you belong to any alumni groups and assess the professional groups you belong to. When you review the groups you belong to, consider the amount of people in it as well as the type of discussions they engage in. Delete those that seem to be less useful and add more.
3. Become an active participant in the groups you belong to. I have a career group for Pace University with more than 3,800 members in it. I welcome everybody who joins it various services and the opportunity to create discussions yet very few people are active. Joining a group and not participating has limited value. What you want to do is gain visibility by creating discussions, posting article and asking questions. Use very opportunity to connect to people in the group. By connecting to them you will gain access to their networks. Instead of being a “2” with them and a “3” with their network you become a “1” with them and a “2” with their network thus reducing the social distance to others in your field.
These are some simple things you can do now to get off to good footing for the new year.
