Lindsey Vonn speeds to three skiing wins despite marital split

A week after three-time World Cup season champion Lindsey Vonn announced her divorce from husband and coach Thomas Vonn, she sped to victory in three Federation Internationale de Ski events in Lake Louise, Canada.

The Vancouver Olympics downhill gold medalist returned to the podium by earning three gold medals this weekend.  On Friday and Saturday, she raced to two downhill wins, searing the field by nearly two seconds in each race.  On Sunday, she pulled-off the trifecta with another win, edging the rest of the pack by .19 seconds.

Without the guidance of her husband, she instead relied on direction from U.S. Ski Team coaches, and support from teammates.

In a previous statement released to the press, she stated, “It is with great sadness that I announce that Thomas and I have begun divorce proceedings. This is an extremely difficult time in my personal life.”

Her 36-year-old husband of four years, confirmed this divorce filing during a New York Times phone interview on Tuesday, “I honestly can’t discuss anything. It’s just a sad, sad situation. Out of respect for each other, we’re not going to discuss it publicly.”

She has long credited Thomas with her success - inclusive of her three titles, and her 45 world cup wins, that positions her in fourth place among all female skiers.

Vonn plans to continue competing on the world cup circuit without her spouse’s on-site coaching, advising, and confiding.

At a post-race press conference, the 27-year-old Vonn said, "Right now, skiing is the best thing for me.  When I’m on my skis and on the mountain I feel calm and comfortable.”
