Lindsey Vonn captures 50th World Cup victory; Tahoe's Julia Mancuso places 13th

It was a milestone that not many skiers reach. American Lindsey Vonn recorded her 50th World Cup victory on Saturday, capturing the downhill on a tough Kandahar course in Germany.

Lake Tahoe skier Julia Mancuso had to settle for 13th place, a number which had some other significance on Saturday. The temperature in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was minus 13 degrees.

Vonn sits atop the Women’s World Cup downhill standings with 530 points, 230 more than second place Tina Maze of Slovenia. Mancuso is sixth overall with 197 points and is seventh in the World Cup standings, where Vonn also has a substantial point lead.

Vonn joins a very select number of women who have reached the 50-win plateau, and she is the only American skier to earn the distinction. The list includes Annemarie Moser-Proell of Austria (62) and Vreni Schneider of Switzerland (55).

Only three men have 50 or more World Cup victories: Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden (86), Hermann Maier of Austria (54) and Alberto Tomba of Italy (50).

“It’s crazy. I am at a loss for words. I already cried with one of the TV crews and that is enough crying for the day,” Vonn said in an Associated Press story. “Fifty World Cup wins is a huge mark for me in my career and more than I even thought possible. I just wanted the 50th win.”
