Nemo Profeta in Patria, says an old Latin proverb, no one is prophet on his own homeland. Today we celebrate screen legends like Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis or Liz Taylor as the greatest American Divas, even if during their lifetime they were considered as sociopath, alcoholics or drug addicted (in the best case) and the media weren’t as aggressive as those of today. Probably if Marilyn lived in today’s media chaos she would had took her life way before her 36th birthday.
What about Lindsay Lohan? Well Lindsay Lohan is without a doubt a natural born Diva.
She embodies the real Hollywood Superstar. Why? Because her private life shows up in the news more than her movies? No, it’s not as simple as that.
In Hollywood when your personal life makes more news than your movies that means there’s something wrong with yourself and your career.
That’s not the case of Lindsay Lohan. For some reason the mainstream media, or the mainstream Hollywood (whatever this would mean to you) decided she’s not welcome anymore to the Hollywood mainstream circuit. They pretend not to invite her at parties or at inaugurations galas or at any other kind of Hollywood event. Even if despite "their" conspiracy against Lindsay, in the end not only she’s always there, but she usually steals the spotlight to the night’s main attraction. Why? Because she’s the Hollywood last diva. She is a natural attraction for anyone, it doesn't matter what's your sex or your sexual orientation, she's got the power to magnetize everyone's attention. That’s it.
The question now is "what does it take to be a diva?" There is plenty of Hollywood actresses around, why she’s the only one who can be defined with a title that overcomes being an average Hollywood star? It’s maybe because of the drugs she takes? In Hollywood every Hollywood actress takes drugs of all kind (even if they pretend not to) so it’s not about drugs. So it should be because she drinks cocktails when she goes out at night? Most Hollywood actresses are indeed alcoholics or are in serious trouble with drinking but they are not able to attract the kind of crowd that's behind Lindsay Lohan. (According to Facebook Advertising Team Lindsay Lohan as a Facebook interest is able to move 1.9 million Facebook unique users)
Ok so why so much attention? And why she’s the last American diva? Simply because she’s an outgoing larger-than-life personality and she does nothing to hide it.
Lindsay Lohan doesn't introduce or act as a Hollywood Diva nor as a Hollywood actress.
Lindsay Lohan consider herself as a human being and she acts spontaneously as a real person and not like a Madame Tussauds wax statue. She’s got desires, emotions, weaknesses and she does nothing to hide them. On the contrary all Hollywood actresses have the same problems Lindsay has, if not worse, the only difference is that they do everything they can to hide them from the public. Lindsay is just so HONEST she does nothing to hide them. She's a real human being and being real in Hollywood is something really rare if not unique because in Hollywood it's kind of hard to find real people and it's even harder to find real people who are actors.
This is what makes Lindsay Lohan the archetype of the last American Diva, being a Hollywood star who has no fear to express her own real feelings by displaying to the world who she really is, like Marilyn used to be for example.
This is something that not only in Hollywood but in every industry and not only in America is a very rare quality indeed.
Mainstream Hollywood actors and actresses they all are ashamed about everything they do. In fact Hollywood actors live their lives in permanent hiding, wearing dark sunglasses and baseball hats, like real criminals on the run. What's wrong with being an Hollywood actor? Are they scared of their own celebrity? Are they bothered by paparazzi and fans? Uhm. More likely they are simply frightened about anything that can expose them to the media. Why? Because they are dominated by a wrapping permanent state of fear. Fear of what? Of appearing for what they really are: simple nobodies.
Some time ago, there was a legend that Hollywood Studios "owned" Hollywood actors. They owned them. They could not go certain places or see that person etc. but that was sixty years ago. Is it still this way today? Frankly I don't think so. However it seems that the fear that affected Hollywood back in the Studio years is still well alive down in Hollywood hills and its canyons.
Regarding Lindsay Lohan she's is in fact a simple honest girl who isn’t afraid of showing herself for what she is. In my opinion, not only Hollywood actors and actresses should take example from her but the whole nation should take example from a woman who isn’t afraid of showing the world who she really is, with all her faults, her weaknesses but also her great talent and her unique sexual charm.
Lindsay Lohan is a very sexy woman. She's sexy, period. Being sexy is not something you can buy at the grocery store or learn it from your favorite film director. Being sexy is something you re born with. In her latest movie, Canyons, there's a scene in which Lindsay walks away from her bed. The way she walks barefoot on the wooden floor is something you won't learn in ten thousands years. It's something you have in your dna. Lindsay is sexy. She's sexy like a few divas of the past. Actually she's not like the divas of the past because she's got her uniqueness and her uniqueness comes from being spontaneous. Marilyn was very similar to Lindsay in a way but sometimes Marilyn got framed by her own public image, Lindsay is different, she's a woman of our times, like Marilyn was a woman of her times. The common thread is they re both very spontaneous and they both say what they feel to say, no matter what the others think. Hollywood is in fact a factory of monsters, because after Marilyn or maybe Audrey Hepburn (she was English though) we had no big Hollywood divas whatsoever. Then came Lindsay, an American girl who wasn't afraid of being herself and of her beliefs, like Betty Davis, or Marilyn who were both women who speak their mind without thinking to much if what they said it was appropriate. (Like if Hollywood is a place where one should be concerned about what to say)
In America, in Hollywood, in Los Angeles, when someone behaves the way he/she likes to, then it might happen you can have some problem. For example if you are a person who likes go partying, in Los Angeles this could be a problem. Why? Because in L.A. you can't walk places, you got to have a CAR. That means you have to drive all the time, no matter where you live or where you want to go. You need a damn car and you have to hit the road. And in Los Angeles, Avenues, Boulevards and streets are patrolled by LAPD all year round, twenty for seven. So if you go to a party and drink a beer, you have a 70% of chances to get stopped by the police and have your alcohol level tested. Then if it happens you are a movie star, you will make families and clan of paparazzi happy forever.
Tinseltown is indeed a place where nothing happens, at least in the star system, life is almost boring, because actors do their best to live like criminals on the run. Basically they don't exist. So when Lindsay came to town she brought a breeze of life with her (and a crowd of paparazzi chasing her)
If you are a movie star and you get caught driving under the influence you are a drug addicted. If you have a car accident you are an alcoholic who tried to take your own life. So in a world ready to express final judgement with no chance of appeal, a young girl who likes partying like Lindsay is absolutely framed.
However, you can tell whatever you want, that she's a drug addicted, she's crazy, she's alcoholic, even if none of these are true statements. Indeed all these judgments being so exaggerated reveal that towards Lindsay there's an insane, irrational overreaction. Usually this happens when average people and mainstream media are in front of an extraordinary human phenomenon.
Being from Italy, I think I can talk about this matter with a certain knowledge.I am talking about the "Stendhal Syndrome". Sometimes in Italy, when foreign tourists stand in front of certain extremely beautiful monuments, like the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, on display at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, some of these tourists they look at the painting and they simply pass out. It's called "Stendhal Syndrome", because Stendhal, the French writer suffered this syndrome a lot.
Under the medical point of view, it's a sort of defense reaction, that our mind puts in action when we are put in front of an extreme beautiful image. Extreme beauty can find us defenseless so it can provoke all kind of reactions.Same thing happens with Lindsay Lohan. Everybody hates her but more or less secretly everybody wants her.
From Charlie Sheen to Woody Allen, they would do anything to have her somehow. (Charlie Sheen was so creative he helped Lindsay dealing with IRS) but Lindsay isn't there, she's not here, she's not there. She's nowhere, she's ephimerous like the archetypal beauty has to be, like the mythological beauty usually is. A moment she's here the moment after she's gone. That's real beauty. You have to appreciate it once you see it.
Lindsay is beautiful, is talented, is smart, but unfortunately she's too honest and too spontaneous, like the real beauty! Although being spontaneous and honest don't match with Hollywood fake moralist world made of wax statues without life inside.
Somebody may say "ok but Lindsay is overexposed!" well amigo, that's more than normal! I told you she's the archetypal beauty how could she not be overexposed?
Besides, in a police-driven system like the American legal system even a Saint would be stopped and put in jail because the American law does not allow people using drugs for example. If you get caught under the influence one time, the second time you go to jail for drugs possession and use. Period.
In Europe, it doesn’t work like that. In Europe the law system does not persecute people who use drugs. In Europe we prosecute people who sell drugs.
In addition, after I have read puritan moralist comments by an old actor like Jerry Lewis ranting against a beautiful young helpless and defenseless actress like Lindsay Lohan, it really made me think America isn’t what it used to be like forty or fifty years ago, when people were supportive of each other, especially if they worked in the same industry and the older was wiser than the rookie and tried to help out.
In fact there’s no wisdom left in Hollywood, just pointless fear that the Studio will fire you if you don’t adhere to their rules. What rules? In Hollywood there is plenty of actors who for example happen to be gay and they cannot come out because the news about them being gay would affect and possibly ruin their image of screen heroes and consequently the one of the studio that produces their movies.....did I really write that?
The truth is an industry which is based upon such a giant pile of lies and in such an hypocrite form, is going to collapse on itself. It’s going to crumble on itself. No question about it. Why? Because in a world made of media, in a world made of total communication, there’s no space for lies and hypocrisy, everything is translucent so you don't have many options when it's about hiding. And that's why in the long term it's people like Lindsay Lohan who will dominate the new way of life, the new era of transparency, where there won't be space for lies and hypocrisy. When this will happen? Well if you didn't realize it yet, it's already happening my dear.
In the end, you can hide, but you can’t run. The Hollywood era of lies and hypocrisy it’s at its last stop. People better get down the bus because this line is going really nowhere.
Lindsay Lohan is the only Hollywood Actress of this era who will be remembered in the future as the only American diva of our times. Why? Because she’s Lindsay Lohan.
