If anyone knows about the downward spiral that can occur from life in the public eye, it's Elton John. After 50 years in the entertainment industry, John has come to a place of deep reflection and concern. As one who understands the struggles that go with fame, his heart of empathy, along with his message of warning goes out to troubled stars. According to a Entertainmentwise report dated Friday, September 13, John has went as far as to pen a song for young stars like Justin Bieber and Lindsay Lohan.
John's latest tune called "Diving Board," is the title cut of his new album, which is his first release in seven years. It contains dark, expressive lyrics that warn of dizzy heights. He uses a diving board to describe their leap into the unknown.
"I feel sorry for these kids. I worry that they will just get swallowed up," he shared.
In a recent interview with the Daily Mail UK, Elton expressed his sadness about Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse. He says he wish he could have helped Amy, and that he tried to help Whitney, but that his messages weren't returned. He saw where things were heading, and realized that no one was there to stop it.
"I listen to her voice and I just want to cry," he revealed.
As a recovering drug addict that wrestled with multiple personal issues, John realizes how dangerous his path was.
"I was 23 when I got famous. And I made every mistake in the book," he admitted.
While some believe that his new song is a look back at his own journey, he says that it's for today's young stars that are in the midst of struggle.
“The drugs, the excesses, the millions on flowers, the tantrums and the glasses … ” he told Britain’s Events magazine. “But it isn’t [about me]. It’s about Lindsay Lohan, Justin, all these kids who are out there now not knowing what the hell is going on.”
Lohan attended John's Oscar viewing party in 2004 and 2006. The two were once close friends, but he admits he 'almost can't bear to look at what she's become.'
Setting aside the fact that Lohan has just completed rehab, and there hasn't been any crazy incidents since, John still says, “I hate to think of Lindsay because she had a talent. She was a great actress, and then it became all about the madness, the parties, and everyone forgets about what put them there in the first place.”
“They get lost in the idea that they are famous for who they are, not what they are. I feel sorry for these kids," he concluded.
Elton's 30th album 'The Diving Board' will be released on September 24. However, his music is already available to stream at amazon.
