Lindenwood rings in the New Year with blowout win over Webster

ST. CHARLES, MO. -- It took a couple of minutes to shake off the rust for the Lindenwood University men's basketball team in its first game of 2013, Wednesday night at the Hyland Arena.

But by three minutes in, the Lions had the lead. And by the 10-minute mark, LU was up by double-digits.

And once it was over, Lindenwood had added at least one more night to its New Year's celebration, as the Lions enjoyed a raucous 96-65 victory over the crosstown rival Webster University Gorloks.

Five different Lion players either tied or set new career-highs in some type of category on Wednesday, led by senior center Brett Thompson, who tied his career-best with 24 points, and senior forward Richie Thompson, who topped his with 15 points.

Freshman Aaron Ramirez tied his own career-high with nine points and blocked a career-high three shots. Senior Efkan Eren grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. And sophomore Darris Smith dished out a career-high seven assists.

So it's no wonder that Lindenwood just ran right by Webster.

The Lions were clearly a team that was glad to get back onto the floor and begin the meaty part of their 2012-2013 schedule, which will include 16 MIAA conference games over the next two months.

Lindenwood is now 7-3 on the year, and will look to get its first conference victory on Saturday, when the Lions host Truman State University at the Hyland Arena at 3 p.m.
