March is Women's History Month. In the Sacramento-Yolo County area, UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi will be the guest speaker at the 26th annual Yolo County Women’s History Month luncheon, planned for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Woodland Community & Senior Center, 2001 East St., Woodland. Women's history also looks ahead toward the future as well as in the past.
How many locals know that Linda Katehi is an electrical engineer with 19 patents in her name? Chancellor Katehi specializes in circuit design. This autumn, the National Science Foundation awarded Katehi a nearly $4 million grant for a program that will increase female participation, particularly Latinas, in science-technology-engineering-mathematics, known as 'STEM' careers, according to a UC Davis news release, "Chancellor Katehi honored among 'Women of STEM': UC Davis."
At UC Davis, she holds joint faculty appointments in electrical and computer engineering and in women and gender studies. Her research focus is in circuit design. The luncheon planning committee selected Katehi for her recognition in the organization, Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics also known as 'STEM,' according to the news releases, "Women's History Month Luncheon in Yolo County - Blogs," and "Women's History Month Luncheon in Yolo County."
In Sacramento, Woodland, and Davis, The theme for the upcoming luncheon is “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.” The purpose of celebrating women's history in science, math, and technology is to recognize the achievements of women throughout history in these technical areas of life as well as and celebrating the history of women in schools, workplaces and communities throughout the country. If you want to attend the luncheon, the tickets are $25 each. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of women’s history materials for Yolo County library branches. The luncheon planning committee selected Katehi for her recognition in STEM.
Not too many people are familiar with the 19 patents held by Katehi as an electrical engineer. UC Davis Chancellor Katehi is one of the most distinguished women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics today and will be the guest speaker at the luncheon.
Katehi also was one of 12 “Leading Women in STEM” honored at the 2012 California STEM Summit in San Diego
The awards recognize the honorees’ achievements in advancing innovative and effective STEM education initiatives across the state and serving as exemplary role models for California women and girls. Katehi became the sixth chancellor of UCD on Aug. 17, 2009. As chief executive officer, she oversees all aspects of the university’s teaching, research and public service mission.
A member of the National Academy of Engineering, she chaired until 2010 the President’s Committee for the National Medal of Science and the Secretary of Commerce’s committee for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is a member of many other national boards and committees.
The committee has coordinated with Patty Wong, Yolo County librarian/archivist, to provide displays and handouts reflecting the theme for Women’s History Month at Yolo County Library branches. Analu K. Josephides, archives/record center manager for the Yolo County Archives, is also working with the committee for archive information on Women’s History Month and provide a display at the luncheon.

Bringing more women into the sciences and engineering
The California STEM Learning Network helps to advance STEM education. When there's a STEM Summit, the event brings together business, government, education, nonprofit and philanthropic luminaries to spark change in STEM education and workforce development, as well as to launch new STEM education initiatives.
Recognizing the dramatic need for increased numbers of women in STEM fields — only 25 percent of STEM jobs in the United States today are held by women — the California STEM Learning Network is highlighting accomplished women STEM leaders and supporting initiatives across California to bolster STEM education for female students, noting that women with STEM jobs earn 33 percent more than comparable women in non-STEM jobs, notes an October 16, 2012 U.C. Davis news release, "Chancellor Katehi honored among 'Women of STEM."
The California STEM Learning Network honors highly accomplished leaders in the fields of education, industry, nonprofit and civic areas for their innovative and successful efforts to create world-class STEM education across California. Focus is on encouraging more women to leadership roles in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
STEM also helps to motivate and inspire more women from a variety of diverse backgrounds to become talented leaders in those fields where society needs more women, namely in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. More doors need to open to women and men of all backgrounds with interest in those fields.
