'Lincoln' wins Oscar for Best Production Design (Photos)

Rick Carter (production designer) and Jim Erickson (set decorator) have won Oscars for Best Achievement in Production Design for the film "Lincoln" on Feb. 24 at the 85th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood, Calif. The Academy Awards are presented by the Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and honors the best in film. Tonight’s show was hosted by Seth MacFarlane live on ABC and was televised in more than 225 countries worldwide.

This is the second Academy Award win and fourth nomination Jim Erickson. His previous Oscar was won in 2010 for Best Achievement in Art Direction for "Avatar."

This is the first Academy Award win and second nomination for Rick Carter. His previous Oscar nomination came in 2008 for Best Achievement in Art Direction for "There Will Be Blood."

Also nominated for Best Achievement in Production Design were:

  • Production Design: Sarah Greenwood; Set Decoration: Katie Spencer for "Anna Karenina
  • Production Design: Dan Hennah; Set Decoration: Ra Vincent and Simon Bright for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"
  • Production Design: Eve Stewart; Set Decoration: Anna Lynch-Robinson for "Les Misérables"
  • Production Design: David Gropman; Set Decoration: Anna Pinnock for "Life of Pi"

In "Lincoln," as the Civil War continues to rage, America's president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield and as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves.

"Lincoln" was nominated for 12 Academy Awards for:

  • Best Motion Picture of the Year
  • Best Achievement in Directing
  • Best Achievement in Cinematography
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role to Daniel Day-Lewis
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role to Sally Field
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role to Tommy Lee Jones
  • Best Achievement in Editing
  • Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score
  • Best Achievement in Production Design
  • Best Achievement in Sound Mixing
  • Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published
  • Best Achievement in Costume Design
