Nominations for the 85th Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning by the show’s host, Seth MacFarlane ("Family Guy"), and actress Emma Stone ("The Amazing Spider-Man"). The Academy broke with tradition in doing that; since the first nominations announcement in 1964, the Academy president has been joined by one or more co-announcers at the event.
This was also the first time since 1972 and only the second time overall that an Oscar show host has participated in the nominations announcement (Charlton Heston in 1972 was the only other show host to participate in the nominations announcement).
Among films, Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" leads the pack with 12 nominations. Among the awards the Civil War saga is up for are best picture, director for Steven Spielberg, along with acting nominations for Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.
The other nine nominees for best picture include (alphabetically) the love story "Amour;" the Iran hostage thriller "Argo;" the independent hit "Beasts of the Southern Wild;" the controversial slave-revenge film "Django Unchained;" the musical "Les Misérables;" the Ang Lee film "Life of Pi;" the romantic "Silver Linings Playbook;" and the bin Laden manhunt film "Zero Dark Thirty."
Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members on Saturday, January 19, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings will also be held at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area. Active members of the Academy are eligible to vote for the winners in all categories.
The Academy Awards, for the outstanding film achievements of 2012, will be presented on Oscar Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live on ABC. The Academy Award presentation also will be broadcast live in more than 225 countries worldwide.
