A group of homeschooling students from the Lincoln area gathered again recently to try more fun science experiments. This week's experiment was "Marvelous Magical Milk"
Based on this video shared online, the students gathered together a few simple items...
- Bowls
- Milk ( they used full fat for this experiment )
- Food coloring ( various colors )
- Dishsoap
They poured about a half cup of milk into their bowls and added several drops of food coloring of various colors.
Next they added a few drops of dishsoap and watched the results.
The milk appeared to swirl around and then change color right before their eyes. Patterns emerged and the students were enchanted.
The results occur because the food coloring is less dense than the milk and so is suspended in the fat molecules of the milk . Once the detergent is added it starts to disperse the fat molecules causing them to drag the colors along with them.
Another cheap and easy science experiment where all the ingredients can be picked up at your local grocery store such as Super Saver or Hy Vee and no special equipment is required.
