Limbaugh: '12 Years a Slave' won an Oscar because it used the magic word 'slave'

The 86th annual Academy Awards ended with the film "12 Years a Slave" taking home the Oscar for Best Picture. While many were pleased with the Academy's selection, one right-wing talker didn't think it deserved it.

The film "12 Years a Slave" directed by Steve McQueen tells the true story of Solomon Northup, an African American from the north in the 1840s who was tricked into slavery and spent 12 years in the south bouncing between plantations until he was finally found and returned home. The film received rave reviews and was given the top honor at the Academy Awards. During his radio show broadcast the following day, Rush Limbaugh, stated that the film only won the award because it was based on slavery or what Limbaugh referred to it as the "magic word."

“There’s no way that movie was not going to win! If it was the only thing that movie won, it was going to win best picture. There was no way. It didn't matter if it was good or bad — I haven’t seen it — it was going to win...It had the magic word in the title: slave.”

In addition to winning the Oscar for Best Picture, the film also took home the awards for Best Supporting Actress, going to Lupita Nyong'o, and Best Adapted Screen Play. The film was based on the true story of Solomon Northup who wrote the memoir himself and was published in 1853.

Rush Limbaugh and many others on the political right and in the right-wing media often like to use race as an issue when it shouldn't be. "12 Years a Slave" won the Oscar for best film because it was an amazing work of art done by great actors, writers and directed by the highly talented Steve McQueen. Race could be used by both sides of the political spectrum to further their agenda, sometimes it's warranted and other times it's not, but in the case of the 2014 film of the year, you should just give credit where credit is due.
