Lima Restaurant and Lounge in downtown D.C. is best known for its trendy lounge and outdoor patio. A large dance floor, state of the art sound system, low lighting, and massive bar make it a chic spot for young professionals in D.C. to frequent with their friends and colleagues.
Unbeknownst to many however, Lima also serves a full dinner menu, featuring great modern Latin American cuisine.
Dining at Lima starts with complimentary bread and butter. But this is no ordinary butter. Rich, creamy and lime infused, once you spread it on a piece of crusty bread it’s like having a savory key lime pie.
Once you stuff yourself on the bread and butter, move onto one of their appetizers. At a time when all restaurants are featuring heirloom tomato salads, Lima’s Mixed Green Salad is a pleasant diversion; it includes Manchego cheese, salty cashews, sweet candied mango, and lime olive oil. The combination of textures and flavors is a real treat; sweet and salty, crunchy and creamy, enhanced by tart lime and a subtle piquancy from the cheese. Oh, and if anyone at your table orders any appetizer that comes with a side of garlic bread, be sure to snag a piece. The bread is crunchy and savory, covered in sweet roasted garlic and creamy butter. Once again, the contrast of the textures of the crispy bread and smooth topping are a delight.
The main course section of the menu is seafood heavy, but for vegetarians there is a seasonal gnocchi. While it is frustrating that many restaurants always resort to serving some kind of pasta for vegetarians, Lima’s gnocchi is unique, with seasonal, local vegetables including morel mushrooms and ramps, which have an onion flavor, and authentic Latin flavors like spicy peppers. The gnocchi is not the lightest or most airy in town, but has the dish has flavor which is key because gnocchi itself is a blank palate, begging for seasoning and depth of flavor. The choice of vegetables and cheese provide the flavor, as well as a variety of textures.
Dessert is marvelous success, including items such as a molten chocolate cake which has a center that oozes creamy liquid chocolate. It is topped with a dulce de leche ice cream, which is a sweet cream ice cream infused with the flavor of Latin America’s famed milk caramels. The dish is definitely a win-win situation.
The crème brulee is also sweet and creamy, and served with a hardened sugar design that is lovely, colorful and glassy.
To be sampled next time? The Churros! Latin America's favorite street cart treat is sure to be a delight at this restaurant.
Lima is a place to come with friends or with someone you want to impress; the fashionable crowd and modern décor scream trendy and chic. Head upstairs or down to the patio for drinks after or before dinner!
