Tomlin, 74, married Wagner, 78, on New Year's Eve during a private ceremony in Los Angeles. The couple has been together for 42 years, reported Tomlin's publicist Jennifer Allen.
We remember Tomlin for becoming an instant success on ABC's "Laugh-In" in the 1970s. She played the part of Ernestine, a nosy, condescending telephone operator who generally treated customers with little sympathy. Ernestine often snorted when she talked to callers at her switchboard.
Tomlin is from Detroit, Michigan.Wagner is from Morristown, Tennessee. The two met when Tomlin was looking for a collaborator to help her develop the character of the wicked child Edith Ann that became a hit on "Laugh In" along with Ernestine, the snorting switchboard operator.
Tomlin and Wagner worked closely together long after the Edith Ann collaboration. While Tomlin was the actress, Wagner was the writer of many of her sketches. They both won Emmy awards in 1974, 1976 and 1981 for their work on writing comedy variety television programs starring Tomlin.
