Liliana of the Veil | Innistrad

The first mythic planeswalker from Innistrad, Liliana of the Veil, has been revealed.  Doug Beyer previews the black planeswalker today on the official Magic: The Gathering site.  Clocking in at a mere 3 mana, Liliana is far more affordable than her prior incarnation, and packs some powerful abilities at that price.

Planeswalker – Liliana Mythic

+1: Each player discards a card

-2: Target player sacrifices a creature

-6: Separate all permanents target player controls into two piles.  That player sacrifices all permanents in the pile of his or her choice.

Liliana of the Veil may not seem that amazing, but a quick glance below the surface tells otherwise.  At the very worst, you’re getting a “Target player sacrifices a creature” for 3 mana – and she’ll still be alive afterwards, ready to fire again after a discard.

At best, you’ll be filling up your graveyard, taking advantage of Innistrad’s graveyard theatrics, tossing flashback spells, reanimation tech, and other relevant yard goods.  Your opponent will be discarding as well – leaving them with incredibly difficult and limited choices should Liliana unleash her dark ultimate.

You’ll have plenty of removal to back yourself up while Liliana ticks down the doom clock, and as long as you have a few cards you don’t mind pitching Liliana will be ramping up quite quickly.

At just 3 mana, Liliana of the Veil was certainly meant to be a good deal more competitive than her necromantic predecessor.  She’s brutal at depriving your opponent of valuable resources – both cards and creatures, and her ultimate is absolutely within reach upon hitting the board.

Liliana will definitely be first pickable material in Limited play and certainly playable in Commander as well.

Personal note – Liliana is very strong, expect to see her dealing out dark nightmares as soon as she’s Standard legal.  Garruk would be wise to watch out!
