According to Google Trends, more than 2 million searches have come into the search engine about TMZ breaking the news that Lil Wayne was placed in a medically induced coma after suffering more seizures on Friday.
As a result, searches for things like "Lil Wayne coma, Lil Wayne dead, Lil Wayne hospitalized, Lil Wayne seizure" have driven news about the rapper to the top of Google's trends tracking tool.
"We're told Wayne is currently unstable, and has been placed in an induced coma. He is breathing through tubes," TMZ wrote on Friday, further updating their breaking-news report with later news that states Lil Wayne was still in critical condition in the ICU, but stabilizing.
TMZ was the first news organization to break the news, and there has been no indication that their statements need to be retracted. Indeed, the news giant pegged sources at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for the coma report.
Perhaps in a fit of fear, sadness or rage about the flurry of tweets citing the TMZ report, rapper T.I. himself took to Twitter, stating he'd just talked to "Tunechi," one of the many nicknames of "Weezy," as Lil Wayne is also known.
“Just holla’d @my Lil bruh Tunechi…& he skraight! TMZ some f-$%X#k-niggaz for reporting that hoe-a$s-s#@$%it!!! That man daughter is like mines. Antonia "Toya" Wright, the ex-wife of Lil Wayne, took a softer but still angry approach.
“It would be a much better world if people would just stop and think before they spread RUMORS,” Toya wrote on Instagram. “Have you considered all the people you are really hurting with your lies???? #kids #family #friends.
Meanwhile, the verified Twitter account of Lil Wayne sent a message at approximately 11 p.m. ET on Friday, trying to assuage fears.
"I'm good everybody. Thx for the prayers and love," it read. Whether it was actually typed by Weezy himself is unknown.
No doubt, lots of unanswered questions that sent people scurrying to the web wondering everything from "Lil Wayne dead" to "Lil Wayne death" will be answered in the wake of this hospital scare.
