Lights equal safety for Philadelphia bicycle commuters

These days it gets dark earlier. Even if you’re still managing to bicycle work in daylight, if you’re like most Philadelphia bicycle commuters this time of year, you’ll find yourself riding home in the dark. To be safe on the road in these conditions, you need at the very least a good working light. This is not exactly news. Or even rocket science, for that matter. But you’d be amazed at the number of “unlit” riders on the streets of Philadelphia.

The other night I stood on the corner of 12th and Chestnut at about seven in the evening. In 10 minutes, I counted 16 cyclists without lights! Many didn’t even have reflectors on their bikes! Several were dressed from head to toe in dark clothing. Not an ideal plan. Here’s a better strategy for dark evening commutes:

·      Get the best and brightest bike lights you can afford. Bike lights range from the basic blinkies that TD Bank gave away on the Manayunk Wall this year to high-end LED models that are a serious investment. If you’re not sure what you need visit a well-equipped local bike shop and ask their advice.

·       Attach a white headlight to your handlebars. Put a red blinkie on the back of your bike, seatpost or helmet.

·       Use reflectors. Attach a reflector to the back of your bike. Pedal reflectors also offer an added visibility.

·       Wear reflective vest.

·       Carry a small flashlight or hands free headlamp in case you have to make repairs in the dark.

·       Pack extra batteries

·       Consider outlining your bike’s frame in reflective tape. Depending on the color of your bike, the tape may be barely noticeable in daylight but in the dark, it can be a real lifesaver.

·       Finally, don’t wait for pitch dark to turn on your lights. Especially this time of year, twilight is just as dangerous for cyclists.
