Lights, camera, action: movie locations of Beverly Hills

Whether you are visiting Beverly Hills as a sightseer, or you are a longtime resident; everyone loves location spotting. In other words, going to the places that are featured in movies. Surprisingly, many movies taking place in Beverly Hills, were actually filmed in more remote locations of Los Angeles County. Here is a list of some blockbuster movies with filming locations in the city of Beverly Hills.

1. Beverly Hills Cop

This 1984 movie starring Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley takes place predominately in Beverly Hills. In reality, only a few of the locations are truly in the city of Beverly Hills. Upon first arriving, Axel Foley passes through some familiar sites, like Rodeo Drive, where he flirts with a blonde in a Mercedes, and also, the Beverly Hills Hotel. Although there are some nightclub scenes that seem reminiscent of the Confidential nightclub, (at 424 N. Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 (310) 275-8511,) these scenes were all filmed outside of Beverly Hills.

2. Pretty Woman

One of the most popular romantic comedies ever, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, is set predominately at the world-famous Beverly Wilshire Hotel built in 1928, where Richard Gere's character is a long time guest. Located right in the heart of Beverly Hills, at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive, the "Beverly Wilshire" hotel has had a number of different corporate owners. At the time "Pretty Woman" was filmed, the hotel was called the "Regent Beverly Wilshire," because it was owned by the Regent Company. At present time, it is owned by the Four Seasons Hotel corporation. The Beverly Wilshire has welcomed legendary guests such as President Barack Obama, the Emperor of Japan, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Warren Beatty, and the Dalai Lama. Additionally, this movie includes the famous shopping spree scene on Rodeo Drive.

3. Bewitched (the movie)

The movie starts off with a Beverly Hills bang, with the first scene of Will Ferrell and his agent meeting with TV producers alongside one of the most famous hotel pools in the world: the Beverly Hills Hotel pool on Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills. The Beverly Hills Hotel bar is also a great nightspot, with a cocktail lounge setup and occasional live music. Later in the movie, when Will Ferrell's character spots Nicole Kidman's character, the two are right on the outskirts of Beverly Hills at the popular Sunset Boulevard location of the bookstore: "Book Soup." The nearby cafe where the two strike up a conversation is actually the adjoining cafe: "Book Soup Bistro."

4. Down and Out in Beverly Hills

Starring Nick Nolte, Bette Midler, and Richard Dreyfuss; most of this movie's locations are interior locations. However, towards the start of the movie, Nick Nolte's character "Jerry," searches for his lost dog at the upscale Rodeo Collection on Rodeo Drive. A great place to stop for cocktails while searching for anything on Rodeo Drive is the Luxe Rodeo Drive hotel at 360 N. Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 (310) 273-0300.

5. California Suite

This 1978 comedy, (based on the famous Neil Simon play of the same name,) has an all-star cast, which includes Alan Alda, Michael Caine, Bill Cosby, Jane Fonda, Walter Matthau, and Richard Pryor. Both the play and the movie take place in the Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Boulevard. However, the play takes place in a single suite in the hotel, whereas the movie takes place in the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Hotel Bungalows.
