Lightning Strike is one of the newest "Theros" spoilers revealed today Sept. 5, 2013 from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert "Magic: The Gathering" expansion set in a tweet by the Oracle of Theros. Lightning Strike is a common red instant burn spell that will see heavy competitive play in the new Standard.
Lightning Strike - 1R
Lightning Strike deals 3 damage to target creatuer or player.
"The hand of Keranos can be seen in every rumbling storm cloud. Best not to stand where he points."
-Rakleia of Shrine Peak
A functional reprint of Searing Spear, Lightning Strike lies in power somewhere between Lightning Bolt and Incinerate. It won't deal four damage to an opponent's creature like Mizzium Mortars will, however you'll be able to target your opponent.
Lightning Strike joins Magma Jet, giving red mages access to powerful burn spells that can destroy opposing creatures or be thrown at your rivals face (please don't actually throw the card at your opponent's head because unless you want to receive a disqualification from a tournament for unsportsmanlike conduct and face possible police charges of assault for injuring their eye with the corner of the card or card sleeve).
<Begin rant> Although Lightning Strike has more flavor than Searing Spear, this author can't help but wonder how many months will go by before the card becomes a Friday Night Magic card. It seems like for the past several years whatever popular burn spell has been in Standard has been transformed into a chase promo only to just rotate out </end rant>.
Lightning Strike will no doubt be a top pick in "Theros" limited and be appearing in a plethora of constructed decks after "Theros" becomes legal.
How will you use Lightning Strike?
