It’s hard to imagine that one year ago players and fans received harsh words of a lockout that would begin with the start of training camp. The lockout as we know and remember would eventually cancel all but 48 games of the 2012-2013 NHL season.
That’s not case this season as Wednesday, September 11th marks the opening of the Lightning’s 21st training camp to be held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum and the first for head Coach Jon Cooper who begins his first full season behind the bench.
Camp begins at 8 a.m. with medicals and physical testing for 38 invitees plus those that participated in the Coral Springs Rookie Tournament last weekend. In all, 62 players will be on hand to open camp.
The team will hit the ice for the first time on Thursday, September 12 and Friday, September 13, with the 62 players divided among three groups for the three practice sessions at the Forum. Thursday’s practices are set for 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., though they are subject to change and are open to the public. Friday’s sessions are closed.

The roster includes many familiar faces, including Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis, Victor Hedman and many others including Valtteri Flippula, a free-agent signing this off-season along with Jonathan Drouin, the third overall player taken at the 2013 NHL Draft, Tyler Johnson, the AHL's Most Valuable Player last season, Brett Connelly, Radko Gudas and others that are expected to compete for a roster spot.
In addition, the Lightning will practice in Estero, Florida at Germain Arena from Monday, September 23 through Saturday, September 28. Those practices are also free and open to the public.
