"Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" is the latest installment in the "Final Fantasy" series, and the last game in the "Final Fantasy XIII" trilogy. With it's release, the final part was meant to tie up all of the loose ends to the story that is "Final Fantasy XIII". Released February 11th, 2014 for the PS3 and Xbox360, the game featured a number of changes, breaking away from its predecessors.

The first item of note is the re-vamped battle mechanics. In the previous games within the trilogy, the mechanics revolved around a bar constantly filling up, and with each move the player made, the bar would gradually deplete, to varying degrees depending on the severity of the move. This system limited the player to some extent, so the battle system within "Lightning Returns" sought to provide the player with more freedom and diversity.

In the new setup, the player is given three customizable outfits each with four slots to equip aggressive and defensive moves to. These outfits each have their own ATB(Active Time Bar) that fill up as the battle progresses. Each outfit can be swapped to instantly in combat, providing much diversity and very little down-time, as the ATB of the other two outfits continue to fill as the player uses that of the current outfit.

In addition to an entirely new battle system, another new feature was implemented into the game. As the player advances, there is a Doomsday counter constantly ticking down to the end of the world, or rather, the end of the game. It begins with seven days until the end of the world, and what the player decides to do in that time is entirely up to him or her. Overall, "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" is very unique and different, and provides much excitement and diversity.
