For those who don't know yet, YouTube has started showing free movies on YouTube. Free stuff, generally, isn't that good so it is easy to dismiss. However recently there have been some pretty decent offerings from Youtube. I have to admit though, that the best ones are still documentaries, shorts or animation, but at least they have some older classics. This is my version of the YouTube Top 15 movies (and yes these movies are completely legal to watch online), all you need is a good broadband connection.
The Hunt For Gollum: Independent Online Cinema presents an unofficial Lord of the Rings prequel made for under $5,000. The film is about how Aragorn tracked down Gollum between The Hobbit & The Fellowship of the Ring.
10mph: An acclaimed documentary on YouTube, this inspirational comedy documentary follows two guys who leave soul-numbing cubicle jobs behind to cross the country on a Segway.
Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony: Through a chronological history of the South African liberation struggle, this documentary cites examples of the way that music was used in the fight for freedom. Available here
Thoth: Haunting and enigmatic, S.K. Thoth built a reputation as one of America's great street performers. Chronicling his life from childhood to the present, "Thoth" captures the spirit of an individual who has made personal freedom his occupation. Directed by Sarah Kernochan, the film won the 2002 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short
The Times of Harvery Milk: The Oscar-winning documentary film about the successful career and assassination of San Francisco's first openly gay man to be elected to office.
7 Days in September: A touching documentary about September 11
Jojo in the Stars: One of my personal favourites, an imaginative, creative animated story on love
Yellow, Sticky Notes: After realizing that yellow sticky notes, filled with "To Do" lists, were consuming his life, director Jeff Chiba Stearns decided to visually self-reflect on his own filmmaking journey by animating 2,300 of those same sticky notes. Blending hand-drawn images and text with an original musical score by Genevieve Vincent, this "animation meditation" played in the official competition at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival
Tanghi Argentina (Short)
LoveandWar(Short)
Marry Me: (Short) Little girl likes little boy. Little boy likes BMX bike. Something has to give. Directed by Michelle Lehman, "Marry Me" on the 2007 Tropfest Australia Film Festival.
Abre los ojois (Open Your Eyes): The orginal, better version of Vanilla Sky. Available here
Slacker: Available here
Night of the Living Dead: For horror fans. Available here
Jagged Edge (18 and above): A classic starring Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges. Glenn Close is a defense attorney who falls for her client, a rich, handsome publisher (Jeff Bridges) who may or may not be what the prosecution claims he is: a cold-blooded murderer. Embedding is disabled for this movie but the link is here.
BONUS: Older classics like Karate Kid Part 3 and Part 2, Billy Zane's Millions, A Star is Born, Farewell to Arms, The last Time I saw Paris, De Niro's The Fan, Jungle Book and Blackmail are also available. These two last shorts also makes it to the bonus section, warning - the second one is a horror short
