Wednesday, September 3, Mazda unveiled the new Miata MX-5. The new model, according to Auto Blog, is the lightest of any generation of the iconic Japanese Roadster, Weight being the only detail Mazda has officially released, the 2016 ND model comes in at 220 pounds lighter than the outgoing NC.
Powertrain details are still being kept close to the chest. Rumors are abound that this will be the first MX-5 to have multiple engine options. A 2.0-liter four cylinder Skyactiv engine making around 200 horses is likely, but the naturally aspirated 1.5-liter from the Mazda2 might be an option. To balance the loss of power, expect a cut in weight and premium features if this is the case.
With the success of the NC’s hardtop convertible, we can expect that to return alongside the standard softtop, but a true hardtop coupe is rumored to be in the works as well. Previously, Japan had only seen a limited production of a coupe in the second generation NB Miata. Having a coupe would fill a gap left by the RX-8 which ceased production back in 2012.
